Oregon State Assesments
Students will be participating in Oregon Statewide Assessments this school year. We will be listing the scheduled days for the English Language Arts (ELA), Math and Science assessments in this newsletter as we finalize the testing schedule.
If parents choose to opt their student out of an ELA or Math assessment, please use the attached form and return a paper copy to the school or send it as an email attachment.
If parents want to exempt their student out of the science assessment, they can do so based on either disability or religion and need to send the school a written and signed note.
Opt-out forms for ELA or Math and written notifications for science should be sent to our Registrar, Jazmin Perez (perezplj@wlwv.k12.or.us).

The Newbery Awards are celebrating 100 years! Come and see the display of all of our Newbery Books collected through the years! The purpose of the Newbery Medal was stated as follows: "To encourage original creative work in the field of books for children. To emphasize to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels. To give those librarians, who make it their life work to serve children's reading interests, an opportunity to encourage good writing in this field."

We Care Alliance
We meet every Thursday at 4:00 pm in Mrs. Fox's Room 214
The WE CARE ALLIANCE (WCA) at Athey Creek Middle School works to create a school community in which all students feel welcome, supported, and free to express themselves, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression. The We Care Alliance provides a safe and welcoming space for all students to discuss and create a greater awareness about the issues and experiences of students in the LGBTQIA+ community and allies. We hope both to educate and to create and encourage an attitude towards others marked by acceptance and free from judgment. It is also our intent to create alliances that increase awareness, decrease prejudices, and create a safe school environment for everyone. We organize school-wide events like “No Name Calling Week,” we also play games, eat snacks, and talk about what is going on in our lives. Once again, everyone is welcome. Come join us!
School Closures & Delays
Upon occasion, schools in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District may be closed due to inclement weather or other emergency situations that cannot be foreseen until conditions are known. In these cases, the Superintendent, in coordination with District Operations, First Student Transportation Services and School Principals, monitors the situation and makes the official call to close, delay or cause early release of students. Under these conditions an official announcement is posted on the regional FlashAlert System notifying patrons and area news organizations of the decision. Please use the following link to sign up for alerts.

During this week students will continue reviewing their Fall Conference Goals/Actions Steps by assessing their progress and being introduced to WOOP plans. W = what is your wish, O = what is your expected outcome, O = what are your obstacles in meeting that outcome, P = what is your specific plan to meet that outcome.
College, Career and Life Readiness Lessons: Since September, students have been engaging in a variety of CC & L Readiness lessons centered on building their internal capacity (soft skills - such as relationships skills, growth mindset, effective communication). For the next 5 months on Early Release Days, students will continue to participate in lessons focusing on their continued development of their CC & L Readiness.
6th graders will be presented a lesson on "Getting Back to the Basics of Student Success", focusing on how to be ready to learn and then being an active member in their own learner. For the remainder of the year, lessons will be centered on continued relationship skills, flexible thinking, self advocacy and additional student success skills.
7th & 8th graders will engage in a lesson on how to access Naviance, which is a fully integrated platform designed to help raise student accountability and performance across a number of key indicators leading to increased engagement , improvements in academic performance, and overall workplace and college readiness. There are four components of this platform: self discovery, career exploration, academic planning, and post secondary preparation. 7th graders will then continue to begin initial exploration of; post secondary educational learning opportunities. collecting evidence of any volunteer opportunities, outside school learning opportunities, hobbies, interests, membership of organizations to support an initial resume, and a growth mindset action planning framework. 8th graders students will be assessing and creating new academic and personal goals, creating/updating their resume, continuing with college exploration, prepare for high school forecasting and transition, review 4 year high school planner, participate in at least one college visit, and participate in our College & Career Exploration & Readiness Fair in the spring. As we move forward in this exciting adventure, we encourage you to log on together and explore the many possibilities of strengths and career exploration.

Attendance
Excused Absences
If a student will be absent from school, a parent/guardian needs to notify the school to report the absence. This may be done by entering the absence in ParentVue, emailing the office at perezplj@wlwv.k12.or.us, or calling our attendance line at (503)673-7425 prior to 10:00 am if possible. If a student is absent for four or more consecutive days due to a communicable disease, a physician’s note may be required to return to school. All absences must be excused within 48 hours. When absent, students are required to make up any work they missed. If students are absent for an extended period, they should make arrangements with their teachers regarding missing work and due dates.
Late Arrival/Tardy Policy
If a student is going to arrive to school after the 9:15 AM start time, we ask that a parent/guardian notify our office staff.
When a student arrives at school late, they need to check-in with staff in the front office prior to going to class.
A tardy must be excused within 48 hours, either by a phone call or a note.
Prearranged Absences & Family Vacations
If it is known in advance that a student is going to be absent for two or more days, the student is required to complete a Pre-arranged Absence Form. This form notifies the front office of the intended absence and allows teachers to provide a description of work the student will miss during their absence. If students are absent for an extended period, they should make arrangements with their teachers regarding missing work and due dates. When absent, students are required to make up any work they missed.
Picking Your Student Up From School
If your student needs to leave school during the school day for any reason, please notify the office staff. Before a student leaves school for any reason, they must check-out with the front office. If a parent/guardian needs to pick up their child during class time, we request the parent send a signed note with their child to school. The student should present the note at the office before school. Office personnel will sign the note and the student will then take it with him/her to class. At the appropriate time he/she will show it to their teacher and report back to the office to meet a parent. Before the student can leave campus, the parent must sign the student out in the office. Due to emergencies or unknown circumstances parents can also call to request a student meet them in the office. For safety reasons, leaving school grounds to walk to the store at any time is not allowed.
PTSA
PTSA wants your involvement!
Who is the PTSA?
The PTSA is comprised of parent volunteers who work with the school to:
Fund teacher grant requests.
Support ACMS students however we can.
Support parents by helping answer questions and leveraging our social media so parents can connect with and hopefully help each other.
Support teachers with startup funds, grants, and most importantly, donuts.
Fund raise with multiple events throughout the year like garage sales, dances, and other events that the students claim are too lame but in reality think they’re awesome, no cap! Sheeeeeesh!
We would love for you to join the PTSA and support our school, students, and parents.
As we get through the first few weeks of school, we will start highlighting some of our past successes on our Facebook page as well as on the PTSA website. We will also start scheduling monthly PTSA meetings over Zoom where you can attend regardless of whether you’re a member or not. If you ARE a member, you can vote on grant requests, executive board members, run for executive board, and many other initiatives including donut flavors.
