News from Carl Sandburg Junior High
January 7, 2022
A Note from Mrs. Johansen
Dear Sandburg Families,
Happy New Year! We look forward to welcoming the students back after a long break..
Please remind your child, upon returning to the building on Monday the 10th, that 3rd quarter classes and schedules may be different. Logging into Infinite Campus prior to Monday and reviewing their schedules will help students feel prepared. Quarter 2 grades will be viewable on Friday, January 14.
This week, all junior highs will be participating in a school wide reboot of school expectations and procedures. This will support students as they start a new quarter.
Our school district sent out a newsletter on January 4th. Please be sure you've read it and are up to date on our COVID protocols. One change is that we no longer will be requiring the self-certification lanyards that are reviewed as students enter the building each day. Shield Testing resumes on Tuesday for those families who opted in on this consent form and email it to SHIELD@ccsd15.net.
District 15 has partnered with IDPH for a vaccination clinic on Saturday, January 8 from 10 am - 3 pm at Conyers Learning Academy. The clinic has 5-11 vaccinations, adult vaccinations, and booster appointments available at this link. If you attended the December 18 clinic and need a second vaccine, you MUST register again for the January 8 clinic.
As much as the new year brings new excitement to the building, now more than ever, it's important that we keep our school safe and healthy. If your child is not feeling well, we understand and look forward to their return when they are healthy and ready to learn.
Enjoy your weekend!
Erika Johansen
Are your Chromebooks Ready?
They should be CHARGED and in their CASES.
Mr. Arnieri, our Library Innovation Teacher, has reported an increase in damaged screens on student chromebooks. Most of the devices come in without their provided case. It's a district expectation that all students have their chromebook in it's case.
A condition of students having a school district chromebook is that they keep it in their provided Chromebook case. Please check in with your child if their Chromebook isn't in the case.
There may be a fee for lost cases, so please look for it at home and put it on the Chromebook by Monday.
On-Time Expectations
Starting this month, we will begin assigning after school detentions for tardiness, as well as student behavior. You will be contacted by an administrator if your child has earned an after school detention. After school detentions will be held from 2:30-4.
If you've been contacted by any of your child's teachers regarding concerns about tardiness to class, please review this expectation with your student. Thank you for your support!

Wildcat Wrestling 2022
On December 3, 2021, you received notice that the CCSD15 Wrestling Season was going to be postponed. The decision was made in the midst of climbing transmission rates and in relation to wrestling which is classified as a HIGH RISK Sport by the IDPH. At this time, we are developing a plan to move forward with the Wrestling season with an adjusted schedule. In order to maximize student safety and keep our in person learning our highest priority, there will be additional Covid mitigation procedures for our wrestlers. The Registration form is in the process of being adapted to include additional, wrestling-specific, information and mitigation acknowledgements/agreements. The schedule has been adjusted to allow for the delayed registration and for the likely surge of cases after the winter break, while still allowing for the full season of events - see below.
We thank you for your understanding and support and look forward to getting our athletes back out on the mat!

This documentation is very important during our contact tracing efforts. Families will continue to be notified if a student is identified as a close contact so they are aware to monitor for potential symptoms.
From Sandburg Student Services Team
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools are increasing their focus on mental health and well-being. Many schools are working to create a positive social and emotional climate to support students’ social and emotional learning. Starting January of 2022, a child in Illinois between the ages of 7-17 can take up to 5 mental health day's each school year without a doctor’s note.
A parent will still need to call in to report their student absent for the day. On the second mental health day, a Sandburg clinician will be reaching out to the parent to discuss if any support at school is needed. If you have any questions or if your student needs mental health support, please reach out to a Sandburg clinician.
