Building a Better Education through MTSS
MTSS is a process designed to help schools focus on high quality interventions that are matched to student needs and are monitored on a frequent basis. School personnel and parents use research and data to adapt instruction and to make educational program decisions for students.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of the MTSS approach is that it eliminates a “wait to fail” situation because students get help immediately within the regular education setting. If screening data indicates a problem area for a student or group of students, interventions are put into place to address these concerns.
While interventions are taking place, school staff monitor student progress. In this process, teachers regularly review this data and use it to evaluate student needs. They are then able to match instruction, resources, and interventions appropriately to best serve Knoxville students.
This year, starting in October, all students will participate in a 30 minute W.I.N. period. W.I.N. stands for What I Need. We will look at the data we have collected so far to determine what reading or math skills students may need to review or extend. Every 6-8 weeks, the school will get together to look at student progress to determine if changes need to be made. Parents will be notified of the results.
