The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of April 23-27!
Message from the principal
I received the following information from our scheduling team. They are working to use student course requests to build our master schedule for the 2018-19 school year and need your help to ensure we have accurate information from students so that we don't have to make changes to our courses in the future.
Important scheduling information for 2018-19
"During Connections on Monday, April 23rd, students will have time to review their course requests for next year. If they are satisfied with those requests, no action is necessary. However, if they would like to make changes to core classes (not electives), they must submit a Schedule Change Request by 3:30 PM on Tuesday, May 1.
Forms are available in the counseling office and must be signed by a parent/guardian. We cannot guarantee there will be seats available in every course, so some requests will not be possible."
Sincerely,
Tim Carver
Principal

Mock Trial team - The SUITS - head to nationals! Opportunities for support
On March 26-28, the Iowa Bar hosted 32 teams from across the state for The Iowa High School Mock Trial Competition in Des Moines. This year, a team from Urbandale, known as The SUITS, won the State Championship, beating Dowling Catholic HS in the semi-final round, and winning over Johnston in the championship round for the State title.
Through the Iowa Mock Trial Program, participants get a hands-on opportunity to examine legal processes and current legal issues. In addition to providing familiarity with the law, mock trials also help students develop important critical-thinking skills and aid in the development of fundamental research, preparation and presentation skills.
As the Iowa High School Mock Trial Champions, The SUITS will be representing Iowa at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Reno, NV in May. In addition to preparing their national case, The SUITS are fundraising to cover the costs of this trip. If you would like to donate toward their travel expenses, please send contributions to: "Urbandale Mock Trial", 7111 Aurora Ave, Urbandale, IA. 50322.
The SUITS are: Jacob Eisbrenner, Jackson Fedosa, Noah Hoffman, Ashleigh Kistenmacher, Blair Liveringhouse, Maya Sims, Ellie Van Roekel, and Claire Weihs.

UHS Hyperstream Team competes at IT Olympics in Hilton Collesium in Ames...Robotics takes home 3rd place!
Several UHS students competed Friday-Saturday at the IT-Olympics at ISU. This year we put together our first Cyber Defense team who tried to defend their network all weekend while a red team of Iowa State students tried to attack and infiltrate. We ended up being ranked 15th out of 30 teams and were fairly pleased with our results for our first time. They definitely learned a ton of things that they will be able to implement at the next CDC.
Current UHS students or incoming freshmen next year that might have some interest in this should contact Mr. Hermon or Mrs. Jacques, our UHS Hyperstream sponsors.
Our UHS team would like to also give a huge shout out to the team from Dupont-Pioneer that met with us each Thursday afternoon to help us learn: Matt Herman (UHS alum) and Kaleb Luse. This year's team consisted of Alex Young, Blake Arntzen, Alec Albrecht and Sanketh Narmnada.
Our robotics team, consisting of Tommy Huynh, Ethan Spidle and Benito Moeckly had a dominating first day in the Hungry Hippo Robotics competition. Our robot started in a colored zone and challenged another robot to return as many ping pong balls to their home zone as possible. White balls were 1 point and yellow balls were 2 points. Our biggest haul of the day was 34 points in one match. Although on Saturday we had difficulty with the real time challenges of a typewriter and ball launcher robots, we still were able to pull out a 3rd place trophy.
