A Look At Our Week....
I hope that you all enjoyed Spring Break! Happy Easter to those who celebrate, and Happy Passover to those who celebrated last week.....I hope that all of your children are excited for the final 8 weeks of Kindergarten!! Your children are nearly first graders!!
Ms. Theresa will be leaving us this Friday to pursue her dream of returning to University to get a Master's degree. She has been a wonderful partner in the classroom, and I am deeply thankful for her hard work this year with the children. We hope that a new Instructional Assistant can be found to support the class quickly.
It is our goal that every single child be able to count to 100 by the end of Kindergarten. Some have achieved this goal already, but if your child has not mastered this skill yet, please support them at home. We will be working hard on this skill, and counting on from any number a lot this quarter. We continue to work on addition and subtraction, aiming to achieve fluency with problems within 0-5. For instance, they should soon be able to see the problem 5-2, and solve it automatically (3).
This is the last quarter to develop those foundational reading skills, that all children build on in future grades. Enjoy having your child read their baggy books to you each night, and test them on their sight words.
I am so excited for Fundations this quarter - we are learning about digraphs!! Digraphs are two letters that go together to produce one sound. For instance, we will be learning wh- whistle - /w/, th - thumb- /th/, ch-chin -/ ch/, sh- ship, /sh /, ck-sock /k/. Your children are blasting through Fundations now, the world of decoding is opening up to them!
This week in Science and writing, we will be reading "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", researching the life cycles of butterflies (I have larvae ordered so that we can watch the metamorphosis up close!) Claxton is planting a pollinator garden outside the beehive, so we can release our butterflies there! We will be learning about pollination in support of the new school project. Thanks to Ms. Brown for facilitating this new opportunity at Claxton, and to the volunteers who are helping to make this happen. We have such dedicated parents and staff at Claxton!
Weekly Sight Word Ideas.....
If your child is a Level E reader (they know who they are!) then you can relax about sight words, and just have them read to you each night.
