REMOTE LEARNING: TIPS FOR SUCCESS
GUNN COUNSELING
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! Gunn Counseling would like to offer the following strategies to help you and your student(s) adjust to learning at home. Please let us know if there is anything else we can be doing to support you and your family through these times!
CREATE A ROUTINE
Structure and routine are good for us all. Creating a schedule for the day and following a routine can also help reduce stress and anxiety. Work with your student to have a consistent schedule and rhythm to each day.
MAKE SPACE FOR LEARNING
Create a quiet, comfortable, and dedicated space for your student(s) to complete their work. For some, this is part of the home away from noise and distractions. Other students may benefit from a location where you can check-up on them regularly to ensure they remain on task. As simple as it may sound, good lighting and a comfortable chair make a difference as well.
MAINTAIN HEALTHY HABITS
It's been said that preparation is the key to success. Work with your student(s) to establish consistent and healthy habits around sleep, eating, physical activity, and leisure time so that when it comes time to learn, they are ready.
TAKE A DIGITAL RECESS (YES...RECESS)
Downtime does wonders. Encourage your student(s) to take breaks and time away from screens. Whether it be for academics or just relaxation, too much time in front of a screen is a bad thing. Help your student(s) break up their day, and encourage them to take time to stretch, a walk to get fresh air, laugh with a friend, and be physically active.
UTILIZE CAMPUS RESOURCES
Though physical distance exists, we are all in this together! Gunn is committed to making sure your student(s) feel supported academically and social/emotionally. During these uncertain times, it is normal to feel anxious and uneasy. In addition to the following Gunn supports, here is an ARTICLE we hope will help guide you through conversations with your student(s).
- School counselors remain available by email and Schoology, and are happy to schedule virtual meetings with students and families to discuss strategies and supports.
- Teachers continue to offer regular office hours to answer questions and provide academic support.
- The Virtual Wellness Center is up and running! Students can visit the Wellness Center by clicking HERE.
HAVE FUN
In the midst of everything going on, don't forget to have fun as a family. It's rare for parents and children to have this much time together, so take advantage and fill your homes with joy, conversation, and memories!
