A Note from Ms. Deal

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a wonderful Chinese New Year holiday. We have been in assembly mode all week and can't wait to show you what we have been working on!

Our class assembly (with Mr. Wellman's class) will be next Friday, February 26th. We are asking that every student wear their normal blue SCIS pants and any green shirt. Their will also be individual costumes. So please talk to your student this weekend and help them figure out what they will wear for their skit or role. If the students would like to practice their assembly songs over break, the lyrics and songs are up on Mr. Wellman's website.

This week is Math students have been perfecting their Area and Perimeter skills. Students measured the length and width of objects at school and at home and calculated the area and perimeter. Students also discussed why and where we use area and perimeter in every day life. Math is everywhere!

Next week we will start to talk geometry. We will look at the different types of angles and dust off our protractors! Stay tuned!

Language Arts

Reading: Students have been reading about different famous explorers. We have read about Emilia Earhart, Christopher Columbus and Jacque Cousteau. Next week we will continue to look at many different explorers and hope that the students each find someone that especially sparks their interest for an upcoming project.

Word Study: Students studied spelling patterns to help them with their vocabulary, writing and decoding skills.

Writing: Students continue to work on writing an adventure story to go along with our exploration unit. We are working on adding detail to our writing by adding interesting descriptive words.

Social Studies:

In Social Studies we continue to talk about exploration. Students have been exposed to many ways to explore: underwater, by land, underground, aviation and space. We will look next week at specific explorers and how their discoveries have impacted the world.
