Principal's Letter

Dear Lake Windward Families,

Happy Valentine's Day! As it turns out, it is believed that Americans have been celebrating Valentine's Day since the 1700s, and in other countries, even long before that. It is a day that is set aside for us to communicate our affections for the individuals in our lives in which we treasure. Please know that I certainly treasure our LWE family! That includes our students, staff and parent community. I appreciate the support and kindness you have shown me over the years and it is an honor to serve as your school principal.

In addition to Valentine's Day, during the month of February we are excited to celebrate Black History Month. We have special displays in our media center featuring biographies about African American leaders as well as many new fiction books written and illustrated by African American authors and illustrators. In addition, on our morning news show, we are focusing on historical and present day African American authors, scientists, Olympic athletes, and inventors to highlight examples of leadership.

This week is Kindness Week at LWE. As our theme for the week highlights, we are encouraging our students to "Be the One Who Shows Kindness". It is my hope that our mindset around kindness doesn't end at the conclusion of this week. Being kind is something we can all strive to do all day, every day!

In conclusion, please be reminded that this upcoming weekend is a long weekend for students. School will not be in session on Friday (professional development day) or Monday (President's Day). We will welcome students back on Tuesday, February 22nd.

Have a great week!

Warm regards,

Julie Morris

Young Georgia Author's Writing Competition

Young Georgia Author’s Writing Competition is a competition sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education. The purpose of this competition is to encourage K-12 students to develop enthusiasm for and expertise in their writing, provide a context to celebrate their writing success, and recognize student achievement in the arts and academics.

This year, with the encouragement from our literacy coach, Mrs. Palermo, Lake Windward had 37 second, third, fourth and fifth grade students submit writing for the Young Georgia Authors Competition! The students’ hard work was acknowledged last Friday during an ice cream social in celebration of the participants and grade level winners.
