FIRST THOUGHTS
The Kent County Health Department continues to be an excellent resource for our school. Recent information from the Department includes the following:
1. The percentage of individuals testing positive is significantly increasing in all age groups throughout our area.
2. The health department indicates that local hospitals are at capacity with COVID and non-COVID patients.
- In the last two weeks, the percentage of middle and high school students testing positive is significantly higher than elementary age students. In fact, the rate of positive cases in elementary age children is about half the rate of students between the ages of 12-17 both nationally and within Kent County.
- The positive news is that there remains a very limited number of transmissions of the virus in the classroom setting regardless of students' ages. For now, safe reopening plans in schools seem to be helping.
- The data clearly indicates the most recent increase in positive cases among students in Kent County can be traced to two specific areas: social activities or gatherings that occur away from school and participation in athletics.
Not a day goes by here at LCS without someone from the staff or the student body expressing gratitude for every day of in-person instruction. Every day is a blessing! We are committed to our safe reopening plan and we will continue to follow it to the best of our ability. None of us wants to return to a situation like we experienced last spring.
Please continue to do what you can to closely monitor out of school activities and possible exposures. We’ll do the same on the school front.
Stay healthy,
Mr. Bonnema

FALL 2020 PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
We are finding new ways to do many things during the pandemic. This includes parent teacher conferences. Conferences are important and should not be cancelled, but right now we can't do them as before, so we innovate! Our plans for the upcoming fall round of conferences include the following:
1. Parent teacher conferences will be conducted virtually (preferred) or over the phone (if arrangements can not be made for a virtual conference).
2. All parent teacher conferences will take place between Nov. 16 - 24. Teachers will set their own schedules, planning around their normal teaching responsibilities. In return, as the calendar shows we will not have school on Wednesday, Nov. 25.
3. Scheduling, done by the classroom teachers via sign-up genius, will begin during the week of Oct. 26. Scheduling for this round of conferences will not take place through the office.
4. If parents are not able to confer virtually via Google Meet, please indicate that to your child's teacher on the scheduling form. The teacher will then conduct the conference via phone on the scheduled date and time.
5. If parents desire a conference with a specials teacher, please indicate that on your scheduling form. Your child's teacher will pass that message to the specials teacher who will then contact you to schedule a separate conference.
6. If your child has multiple classroom teachers (grades 5-8) you will only be able to have a conference with one homeroom teacher. Teachers in these grades are being given time to confer with each other and cooperatively plan for conferences. So, the teacher you meet with will be well positioned to pass on information from your child's other teachers. We apologize for this limitation. We believe that the virtual format will work, and it is our best avenue for this fall's round of conferences, but it will force a fair amount of extra work for all of our teachers. This work, in addition to cooperative faculty planning, requires us to limit 5th-8th teacher schedules to one specific class of students.
