5 Book Dive
Summer reading challenge!
Without practice, reading skills decline over the summer.
Research shows that skills learned during the school year are lost or forgotten over the summer. When students don't practice their skills over the summer months, they can fall behind by the time school starts. This is known as the "summer slide".
Join us for the 5 Book Dive Summer Reading Splash!
The Splash! is happening at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center at 1500 Barbara Jordan Blvd. on Saturday, May 19th from 10am to 3pm. There will be author panels, book signings, and activities for children of all ages as well as a BookPeople book fair. The author of The Last Kids on Earth, as well as The Baby-Sitters Club and the author of I Survived will be there among others. Award winning author Kate DiCamillo will be the keynote author. SVE 5 Book Dive summer reading challenge.
We have been talking about the importance of summer reading during our library lessons in the month of May. During their final library visit, students will create a bookmark to log their summer reading. Students should read a little bit each day. Reading one "just right" book every two weeks will help maintain skills in reading and across content areas, ensuring your student comes back to school in the fall ready to succeed in the next grade level. Every student that turns in a completed bookmark with five books logged and a parent signature will be invited to a special summer reading celebration in the library when we come back to school in the fall!
