Language Arts
- First Grade Reading Buddies - Next Wednesday we will be starting first grade reading buddies. The 4th graders have selected a picture book from the library to share with the 1st graders. Please have your 4th grader practice reading his/her picture book aloud this weekend. Have your child focus on fluency and expression. Please have him/her bring the book back to school on Monday.
- Reading - This week was a review week. We reviewed cause and effect, questioning and theme. Students also took the Unit 1 Assessment, I'll be sharing these scores with you during conferences next week.
- Writing - We focused on brainstorming and prewriting for our personal narratives.
- Grammar - We reviewed subject and predicate, proper nouns, and sentence fragments and run-ons.
- Spelling - Spelling was also a review this week. Students worked on commonly misspelled words.
Math
This week in math, students were challenged with more algebraic thinking. They drew models and wrote equations to help solve comparison word problems. They also learned to multiply tens, hundreds, and thousands (6 x 5,000) and to estimate products using rounding.
Science
Science-
We learned about different structures animals use for sensing their environment. We learned about “close reading” and practiced this strategy all week. Please ask your child to tell you about it. It is a valuable tool to use, especially when reading nonfiction texts. The students worked in partners to answer questions about the text. We will be making pinhole cameras next week. Donations of paper towel or toilet paper tubes are needed. If you have any, please send them in.
Thank you to those who have returned the DTE Think Energy surveys. Please return the survey by October 28 if you have not done so.
WE LOVE BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION
