The Tiger Times

October 2018

The MSD of Decatur Township is Student Invested, Community Connected. We prioritize Student learning, Safety and Customer Service, fostering a support system for our families.

A Note from your Principal

Dear West Newton families,

September certainly did fly by quickly! Your children and the West Newton staff have been very busy setting the stage for a rich year of learning. By now, Tiger Pride is pervasive throughout West Newton and students are deep into the literacy, math, science, and social studies content they will learn this year. Some grade levels have already taken field trips this year as they take their learning beyond the walls of our school; and many classrooms also enjoyed Ms. Keene’s school “field trip” with Star Lab right here at West Newton Elementary!

A huge shout-out to our amazing PTO and volunteers for their work in providing such a wonderful Book Fair! This annual event supports our students as they continue their journey as readers and our PTO volunteers dedicate many hours to make this an amazing event for our students. Our PTO also surpassed their goal with our trash bag sales which means profits go directly back in to our classrooms to support our students AND Mr. Werner made good on his promise to dress up like a unicorn at Tiger Time. The kids loved it!

We have many upcoming opportunities to support our students in a variety of ways:

· Purchasing a Yankee Candle product with profits going back in to our classrooms

· Volunteering to pop popcorn one Friday per month as a special monthly treat

· Volunteering for our Santa’s Shop

· Volunteering for our Winter Wonderland

Students shared their learning goals and data pages with parents at conferences last week. I am always proud of our students for setting goals with their teachers and parents, as well as always wanting to grow as learners! Please let us know at West Newton if there is anything else that we can do to support your student. Thank you for being such amazing partners and entrusting your child’s learning with us each day.

With Tiger Pride,

Susan D. Strube
