School Library Media Month!

Instructional Role of School Library Media Specialists
Literacy, critical thinking, and the inquiry process are key components of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and a school library media specialists’ forte. The current definition of literacy expands beyond the use of traditional print texts to include digital content (i.e. eBooks, databases, interactive media, and multimedia). It requires us to expand our traditional understanding of the reading process and to provide students with strategies for interacting with these new technologies.
The American Association of School Librarians has created a document entitled AASL Learning Standards and Common Core State Standards Crosswalk. Through this crosswalk, it is easy to see that what was previously called a "library curriculum" is now embedded in CCSS. Students who meet these standards: demonstrate independence; build strong content knowledge; respond to demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline; comprehend as well as critique; value evidence; use technology and digital media strategically and capably; and come to understand other perspectives and cultures. These elements are at the heart of what school librarians do on a daily basis.
