Spanish and French curriculum makes language learning a cultural adventure and explores language and cultures through explicit presentation and integration of the five C's: Communication, Connections, Comparisons, Culture, and Communities.
KINDERGARTEN
In Kindergarten, students learned to identify and talk about school supplies. Now, we are learning how to describe family members and activities.
Spanish vocabulary: la familia, la mamá, el papá, el hermano, la hermana, la abuela, el abuelo, el bebé, la mascota.
French vocabulary: la famille, le grand-père, la grand-mère, le père/papa, la mère/ maman, la soeur, le frère, le bébé, le chien et le chat.
FIRST GRADE
In first grade, we completed a unit on meteorology, weather and the calendar. Now we are learning about our community and professions.
Spanish vocabulary: Places- el parque, la playa, el hospital, el banco, la escuela, el cine, el supermercado. People- el maestro, el doctor, la enfermera, el policía, el bombero, el dentista,
French vocabulary: Places- le parc, le cinéma, la plage, l’école, le musée, l’hôpital, la banque, le supermarché… People- le docteur, le policier, le pompier, le dentiste, le professeur...
SECOND GRADE
In second grade, after we finished our Geography and Neighborhood unit, we are now learning about food and nutrition including fruits, vegetables, healthy food choices, and what we eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner, etc.
Spanish vocabulary: Frutas (La manzana, la pera..), las verduras (el brócoli, la zanahoria…), desayuno, almuerzo, cena...
French vocabulary: Les fruits ( les fraises, la pomme…), les légumes ( le brocoli, la carotte…), le petit-déjeuner...
THIRD GRADE
In third grade, students finished creating and labeling their maps with places and activities related to Life in Greenwich. Now we are reviewing places, activities, and transportation before we launch our Animal Adaptation unit.
Spanish vocabulary: Places- el parque, la playa, el hospital, el banco, la escuela, el cine, el supermercado. Activities- nadar, esquiar, pescar, navegar, jugar: fútbol, tenis, béisbol, correr, leer, estudiar...
French vocabulary: Places- le parc, le cinéma, la plage, l’école, le musée, l’hôpital, la banque, le supermarché… Activities- danser, cuisiner, lire, nager, jouer (au foot, au basket, au baseball…), faire du vélo, jouer aux jeux vidéos, regarder la télé et dessiner.
FOURTH GRADE
In fourth grade students learned all about Life in Connecticut including geography and climate. Now we are in our Biography unit. Students are reading biographies of important figures related to the target cultures. They are also learning to share/ exchange personal information by interviewing classmates.
Spanish vocabulary: Sample questions: ¿Cómo te llamas? ¿Cuántos años tienes? ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños?...
French vocabulary: Comment tu t’appelles? Quel âge as-tu? Quand est ton anniversaire?...
FIFTH GRADE
Our 5th graders are learning to express themselves by speaking and writing using proper grammar in the target languages.
~Spanish Heritage Speakers are reading authentic literature to maintain their bilingual skills.
5th Grade Themes: Family, School, Friends, Likes and Dislikes, Feelings, Clothing, and Healthy Choices and Foods.
