Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #32 2017-2018
Did you know? Protective factors promote mental health and play a role in mitigating drug and alcohol abuse and mental illness. Protective factors can be found and developed in the following categories: individual youth, the family, and the school and community (Erbacher, Singer, Poland 2015). Youth experience mental wellness when they possess confidence and hope for the future, have social connections, participate in sports or other vigorous activity, find meaning in religious/spiritual practices, have coping skills, have problem-solving skills, and avoid drug and alcohol use. Family protective factors include having consistent routines, monitoring youth, developing close and caring relationships, providing medical and mental health care as needed, and preventing access to alcohol, tobacco, drugs and other dangerous items. Schools and communities can foster universal mental wellness by creating a safe environment that works to prevent bullying, supports academic achievement and regular attendance in school while helping everyone to feel like an important part of the school and community (Erbacher, Singer, Poland 2015).
Call to action… The protective factors outlined above are within our control to promote and develop. We can impact the 21.6% of 6th graders, 28.5% of 8th graders, 34.6% of 10th graders, and 30.1 % of 12th graders who reported that they felt depressed or sad MOST days in the past 12 months (2015 GV PAYS).
