Principal's Message
I’ve been so impressed by the amazing works of art our students have completed recently. Both the Draw/Paint Class and the Art 1 Class have been working in ceramics. Here are their latest creations:
Draw Paint Ceramic Community Tiles
Art 1 2D & 3D Ceramic Commission
And Mr. Ashkinos was kind enough to make a short video showing the Shattered Value Drawings from his Grade 7 class as they hone their skills that they will apply in the higher level classes:
Grade 7 Art - Shattered Value Drawing
The arts are such a wonderful part of our ISB program because in the student learning, the greater community also benefits through the beauty and creativity put on display.

Culture Week and International Night
Culture Week, a tradition of many years here at ISB, will be celebrated this year from February 7 to February 11. During Culture Week students participate in a variety of activities that help them grow their international lens and develop increased intercultural respect. It culminates in International Night on Friday with activities put on by our various student clubs that have an international dimension. This year’s theme is “We Are the World” as we recognize and celebrate the diversity within the ISB community.
We need your help to make this happen! Parent volunteers are needed to help with logistics leading up to Culture Week, helping us coordinate during the week, and most importantly, offering workshops and presentations to classes of students. In the past parents have given presentations on a huge variety of topics from the international dimensions of their own work, to their family stories, to sharing unique cultural games or crafts. If you are able to volunteer, please fill out this form and we’ll get back to you.
Even if you are not able to volunteer, please mark your calendars for International Night on Friday, February 11 as the whole family is invited to come to ISB to participate in this.

Student COVID Testing
If you opted in for the free student COVID testing, please remind your student to pick up their test kit during lunch on Tuesdays and drop them off in the white cooler on Wednesdays as soon as they arrive at school. Also, please place the labels on the container in the manner shown below:
When handwriting labels, please clearly spell out the student’s name and keep the gauze pad flat in the bag, do not wrap the tube up in the gauze pad.
Winter Gram Sales
Middle School StuCo will be selling Winter Grams during 1st and 2nd lunch Monday through Thursday next week. The Winter Grams are 2 for $1.00 and will be delivered during Advisory on December 16th. Students fill out the message and StuCo will attach a treat!
SAT and ACT
Juniors typically take the SAT and/or ACT in the spring of their junior year. All ISB juniors will take the ACT during the school day on April 5th, 2022. If students would like to take a test in addition to that one, you can sign up on your own through the following websites:
ACT – www.actstudent.org
SAT – www.collegeboard.com
Many colleges have gone test optional either temporarily due to COVID or permanently. You can find a full list of schools that are test optional at www.fairtest.org.
College Board offers many free resources including personalized test prep in coordination with Khan Academy. Here is the link to ACT’s free prep site. Other free online source include CIS (log in through the BSD student tabs) and Learning Express available through WCCLS. There are many outside resources that students can use as well, but do cost money, such as Huntington Learning Center, Saturday Academy, PCC, Stumptown Test Prep, and Sylvan Learning Center. Almost all colleges accept either the ACT or SAT for admissions.
Culture Corner
World AIDS Day takes place on 1 December each year. It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day.

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December — the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR is a milestone document, which proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Available in more than 500 languages, it is the most translated document in the world.

December 13, 2021 - Festival of Lights
Throughout Sweden the feast day of Lucia, or Lucy, is celebrated as a festival of lights. Lucia symbolizes light and growth for human and beast as she emerges out of the darkness.
In the early hours of the morning of December 13, a young woman dressed in a white gown and wearing a red sash and a crown of lingonberry twigs and blazing candles, would go from one farm to the next carrying a torch to light her way, bringing baked goods, stopping to visit at each house and returning home by break of day. Every village had its own Lucia.
Today in Norway & Sweden many families have a Lucia-Queen in their own home, often the youngest daughter. The girl wears a white dress and a crown with electric lights. She wakes the rest of the family with a song, saffron buns & steaming coffee.
