Project Lead The Way: The Science of Flight!
This week, we kicked off our first unit in PLTW. The students worked in partnerships to compare and contrast scientists and engineers. They learned about the importance of S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning and thinking for the future. The first project is all about the science of flight. Students learned about the four forces of flight (lift, thrust, weight, and drag). They also experimented with the causes and effects of balanced vs. unbalanced forces. The class had a lot of fun using the flight simulation app, Aero, to try out their knowledge as a bird. Finally, we ended the week experimenting with hand launched propellers. Next week, the students will design and test their own aircraft.
Jesse and Leo are experimenting with forces of flight!
Shayla and Bianca are trying to give their propeller more LIFT!
Briyah and Ashli are experimenting with speed and thrust!
Flat Stanleys
We finished sharing the last of our Flat Stanleys' travels around the country. A few Stanley's didn't make it back from their adventures. If your child receives his/hers in the future, please send it in and we will still share.
Here is our map showing all of the places visited!
Look What We're Learning!
Math: The second half of Unit 5 has challenged us to learn about decimals. We know how to read, write, and compare decimals!
Inquiry: We launched our first unit for Project Lead the Way!
Writing: Free writing time
Reading: We are learning about the main idea and supporting details in a text. Also, most students finished their first chapter book/book talk with their reading partner.
On Tuesday, I was surprised with an email from the Hamilton County Current. I have been nominated and chosen as the Teacher of the Month! I was chosen because of an essay written by one of my students who is now a fifth grader. Of course I am honored and touched. All of my current students will benefit. On Tuesday, January 26, Market Direct will serve my class and me a luncheon of pizza, fruit, and bottled water. If your child does not want to eat this lunch, they will still have the option of buying a school lunch or bringing a home lunch. It will be great to enjoy this honor together.
