SCHLEGEL SAFARI
JANUARY 2019
A letter from your Principals!
Happy New Year Schlegel Families!
We hope everyone enjoyed the last days of 2018 and are embracing 2019! Of course, we are starting the year off with a focus on literacy. All students attended a surprise literacy assembly on Monday, January 7. Each class received a wrapped box of books to add to their classroom collections. Also, our PTSA sponsored Family Literacy Night is on Friday, January 18 from 5:30-7:30. Be sure to bring the whole family to Schlegel to join in literacy fun!
Would you please do a favor for us? Please be sure to encourage family and friends who have kindergarten eligible children to join us on Tuesday, February 26 from 6:30-7:30 to learn about the Webster Kindergarten program and register their child. This helps us out as we plan for the number of kindergarten classes we will have in the fall.
Happy New Year!

January 2019
Happy New Year to you all! As we look forward to what 2019 brings, here is a list of family-centered resolutions. Take some time as a family to see if one of these would work for you! (from verywellfamily.com)
New Year's Resolutions for Families
We will eat fast food one less time each month.
We will add at least one fresh fruit snack to our daily routine.
We will switch to whole-grain bread, pasta, and cereals.
We will have a family "pantry raid," reading labels and removing foods that don't fit in a healthy eating plan (those high in sugar, trans fats, or high fructose corn syrup). Then we will shop together to restock with healthy foods.
We will spend 30 minutes outside playing together as often as possible, regardless of the weather.
We will find a place that provides opportunities for the entire family to be physically active together or offers child care and after-school or teen programs.
We will add a physical activity or play time to the calendar. We will schedule an evening walk, fitness class, or soccer games for kids with the same commitment as other important meetings.
We will pick a fun run/walk or 5K a few months away, sign up, train as a family and participate in it together.
We will share a meal (whether it's dinner or breakfast) together most days of the week.
We will plan an active family vacation this year.
Good luck and Happy New Year!

"Tis the Season" for Winter Illnesses
Once again, a reminder about infection control: cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough, throw away your tissues promptly, and wash your hands! Influenza (the flu) is easily transmitted through the air (sneezing/coughing) and close personal contact. Cold and flu viruses can linger on doorknobs, telephone receivers, computer keyboards, and other surfaces. It is important to wash your hands frequently and try to avoid rubbing your eyes and nose or putting your hands around your mouth.
The decision to keep your child home from school is not always clear cut. Most often your child will do fine in school (with a little encouragement and a box of tissues). Here are some guidelines to use in determining whether your child should stay home.
*Any condition you think or know is contagious to others.
*Fever greater than 100.4 orally.
*Child is too ill, sleepy, or lethargic to sit still all day in school.
*Severe sore throat, with fever or lethargy, or lasting longer than 48 hours (Contact your healthcare provider). REMINDER: If your child has had a throat culture for strep he/she may NOT be in school until the results are known. If you child is diagnosed with strep, he/she MUST be on the antibiotic for 24 hours before returning to school.
*Red/Runny eyes (until cleared as non-contagious by your healthcare provider)
*Severe ear pain or drainage from the ear (Contact your healthcare provider)
*Honey-crusted sores around the nose or mouth (Contact your healthcare provider)
*Significant rash accompanied by fever, sore throat, stomach ache, or a rash in various stages including boils, sores, or bumps (Contact your health care provider)

Remember: Notify the school if your child will be absent: 265-2513
If for some reason we feel that your child needs to go home early from school, we will need to be able to contact you. Please be sure that your contact information is correct in Infinite Campus and that your Voicemail box is EMPTY. If your mailbox is full we are unable to leave you a message to communicate to you about your child.
Please help remind your child to dress appropriately for the colder weather. This includes warm coat, gloves/mittens, hat, and boots. Snow pants help keep the students warm and dry during recess play too.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact us in the Health Office: 216-6023
We hope your January is happy and healthy!

Staff of the Month for January
Miss Renna is our January Staff Member of the Month! Described as approachable and organized, a parent had this to say about Miss Renna: I had the opportunity to volunteer in my daughter’s first grade class this week and I just wanted to recognize her teacher, Miss Renna. Miss Renna really impressed me with her control over 22 first graders, who were getting to the breaking point of the day. She was well prepared and organized as she kept the wandering minds of 6/7 year olds on track with the tasks at hand. You could also tell that she has built a great relationship with her students and that she is approachable and friendly. The class environment was really positive and it was obvious that the students care and like to work together with each other. Good job Miss Renna!
