In the News

From the Principal's Desk

It has been exciting to see students settling into their school routines and engaging in learning activities in the classroom. We have exciting news to report at the Early Childhood Center. We have a new mascot - the Penguin! Our friends at the Kansas City Zoo welcomed us to the family on their penguin cam. If you want to check out the Penguin cam, here's the link. We will be having a visit from our friends at the KC Zoo to introduce the new mascot to our students and provide educational information to them about penguins. We will update you when that date is confirmed.

Thank you, families, for your involvement and support. We appreciate your patience and attention to safety at pick up and drop off.

Notes from the School Nurse:

Get Your Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz’s On!

Sleep is no less important than food, drink, or safety in the lives of our children. Although we all know this sometimes we get so busy with our daily schedules packed with school, after-school activities, social media, that bedtime is pushed back, mornings start earlier and nights may be anything but peaceful. Missing bedtimes may not seem like a big deal, but it is. Getting quality uninterrupted sleep allows your child to move through all of the different and necessary stages of sleep. Did you know that children between 3-5 years of age should get between 10-12 hours of sleep a night? This may seem like a lot but their little bodies are growing and recharging during this very important time. Sleep is the power source that keeps your child’s mind alert, calm, and ready to come to school rested and ready to learn. Healthy sleep allows positive brain development and appears to aid in the prevention of many learning and behavioral problems. As parents, it is our responsibility to be sensitive to and protect our children’s sleep, just as we do their safety and ensuring that they are fed and clothed. Start healthy sleep habits now for your children to give them the best start every day!

Seeking Volunteers to Join our School Site Council

As we begin a new school year, we are looking for volunteers for our SM Early Childhood Education Center School Site Council. The purpose of the school Site Council is to advise the school on such matters as student learning, education programs, school improvement planning, and accreditation issues. The site council also plays an advocacy role for the school regarding the same issues.

The School Site Council consists of a variety of members including the principal, teachers, other school personnel, parents of students attending the school, the business community, and other community groups.

If you are interested in serving as a member of our School Site Council, please fill out an application and return to the school office. You can also complete an online application, if you prefer.
