NESC Newsletter- JANUARY
AN INNOVATIVE EDUCATION FOR A BETTER TOMORROW
NESC School Resource Officers
NESC would like to welcome our new school resource officers (SROs), Officer Jason LaFary, Officer Matt Price, and Officer Chad Gilbert!
When asked about the SRO program, Officer Matt Price had the following to say:
"What a great first day as we kick off Northeast School Corporations’ first SRO program. We are excited and enthusiastic about the opportunities that lie ahead. As we embark into this journey together, we look forward to providing our students and school staff with a safe environment in which they can learn, teach and grow.
This is a tremendous task that we have been given to not only provide a safe campus for all Thunderbirds in the NESC, but it is also a rare opportunity to provide our students with additional programs and mentorships that will surely get our students to soar above the rest.
We want to thank the NESC, Dr. Baker, and all your staff for the platform and opportunity to give back to our community in such a profound way."
NESC Wonder Lab
The Wonder Lab is preparing for Wonder Wednesday's in January and March, along with our elementary school visits in February and April. We have added a date for the middle school to come and participate. January's sessions will be Robotics. K-6 students are required to have an adult partner to participate and investigate our different robots. Middle school students can bring an adult or participate independently. After investigating our different robots, participants will be given different challenges to complete - mazes, obstacle courses, etc. All times are from 6:15-7:30 and students need to RSVP to Mrs. Brown at browng@nesc.k12.in.us in order to plan accordingly.
January Dates:
Middle School Wed., January 11th (RSVP by Mon., Jan. 9th)
K, 1st & 2nd Wed., January 18th (RSVP by Fri., Jan. 13th)
3rd, 4th & 5th Wed., January 25th (RSVP by Fri., Jan. 20th)
Boys Night Out
Several NENE boys enjoyed this event on December 7. Boys and their family partners moved from room to room working on art projects, circuits, and an activity that made their reindeer fly!
Mixed Media Art
Identified high ability students from both elementary schools, under the guidance of Jessica Kamman, Jenna Redman and Gretchen Brown, are participating in a fine arts enrichment program this year that is made possible through grant money. They recently visited the Wonder Lab where retired NCHS/MS art teacher, Sandy Auterson, led the students in a mixed media art lesson.
Northeast North Elementary
NENE 1st Graders Make Festive Houses
First graders got into the spirit of the season designing and creating their very own gingerbread houses. Parents donated all kinds candies, icing, and graham crackers to help create these delicious dwellings.
“It was fun getting to pick out all the things I could put on my house,” said Gideon Ramsey.
“The glue (icing) tasted great,” said Elijah.
NENE Enjoys a Holiday Movie
In years past, Northeast North students would travel to the movie theater in Terre Haute for a holiday show. But, with the cost of tickets and travel expenses being high, another plan was put into action. Thanks to our friends at the United Methodist Church students got to enjoy a walking trip to the church and the opportunity to see a movie with their friends for free. Students enjoyed watching a show and eating popcorn and snacks just like at the movie.
NENE Christmas Show Returns to Live Performances
It has been since 2018 since Northeast North was able to have a live Christmas show for family and friends. The gym was being renovated and then Covid kept large gatherings from happening. “The “Merry and Bright” show was a return to normalcy,” stated Mrs Mckillop. The students performed songs that were upbeat and fun to sing. The show kicked off with sixth graders dancing and getting the crowd clapping to the beat. The fifth graders entertained the audiences with their rendition of “The Jingle Bell Jukebox”. Poodle skirts and the jitterbug were part of their act! Of course, Santa dropped in to watch the students add some enjoyment to the season.
Santa's Visit!
Santa's Workshop
Students were busy making presents for their loved ones the last few days in December. Students made wreaths, hand-painted ornaments, snow globes, snowmen candy bars, handprint artwork, and decorated root beer to look like Santa. Students even made gifts for their pet cats and dogs! Santa Workshop is always fun. The gifts that kids make are things that are family treasures that are taken out year after year to remember how little they were in elementary school.

Northeast East Elementary
NEEE Student Council Projects
Northeast East Elementary School's Student Council in Hymera has been very busy this Christmas season with three major projects. One of these projects was purchasing and wrapping presents for clients at SCARC Industries, a facility that provides work for adults with developmental disabilities. Another project involved purchasing and decorating 65 table top Christmas trees for the Cobblestone Crossings Health Campus, which is a facility for elderly adults. The last project, called "You've Been Mugged," aimed to spread Christmas cheer throughout the school by providing mugs filled with all the supplies for a warm cup of hot chocolate to ALL staff members. Overall, the Student Council at Northeast East Elementary has done a great job of giving back to their community and spreading holiday cheer.
NEEE Betas Christmas Service Project
NEEE Betas' Service Project for this semester was to help raise toys and money for the local organization, Christmas For Kids. This is a yearly service project that students love to be involved in. This year, the Betas raised over $600 and 2 giant boxes of toys for the organization by offering reserved seating at the Christmas program as well as having a bake sale at the Hymera Ruritan Craft Bazaar. A couple of Betas also volunteered to help separate and set up at the Christmas For Kids distribution center.
Indiana Conservation Officer Visit
In December, Indiana Conservation Officers from District 5 taught a Hunter's Education class for the 6th grade students at Northeast East. K9 Officer Fin also made an appearance to assist. All students passed the test at the conclusion of the class. Congratulations!

The annual blood drive is Friday, January 20. Donors will receive fun Versiti beanies while supplies last!
"We Care" Closet!
North Central Jr/Sr High School would like to introduce to our students, parents, and guardians our new “We Care” Closet. This idea originated at a teacher’s meeting in a discussion about our students' needs and developed into what we believe will be an amazing way for us to help our “kids." Because we care, we have created a “closet” that includes any item that they might need. Whether it is clothes, shoes, hygiene products, school supplies, or even food for snacks at school or weekends at home, we will have it all, and it is FREE!
With the help of some very generous donors, we hope to be able to fulfill the needs of all of our students, no matter what they are. If a student has a need, there are two ways they can make a request. Pictured is a card they can fill out and place in the box, both of which are located on the bulletin across from the main office. The other way is to use the link provided and fill out the Google Form. This information will be kept confidential and the student should choose, either on the card or on the Google Form, how they would like to receive the items they request. If a student has a need that is not listed, they may simply write it on the card or include it in the Google Form. Students may request items as often as they have a need. Once we get the request from the student, it should be filled within a couple days depending on inventory. Please do not be afraid to ask if you have a need - because we CARE!
