Syllabus for English 2013-2014

Welcome to Sullivan Middle School
Hello and welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. My name is Ms. Maria Pallotta and I am thrilled to be able to work with you this year. I am confident that this year is going to be a great learning adventure.
What to Expect
It is my goal to prepare you as best I can for high school. There is so much ahead of us in this upcoming school year but I know that together we will achieve greatness. I wanted to break it down, so that you will know what to expect in English 2013-2014.
Here are some of our learning objectives:
* We will read all kinds of literature such as fiction, non-fiction, poetry, short stories and novels.
* With lots of practice, you will be able to analyze any kind of text as well as identify the meaning of a text.
* You will study the use figurative language within the literature read during class.
* You will learn how to make connections as well as compare and contrast different texts.
*You will be able to interpret the significance of a text.
*You will develop and expand your vocabulary.
*You will practice public speaking through presentations as well as other class activities and exercises.
Classroom Rules and Procedures
To ensure that each and every student will achieve success, it is important to follow each of these rules and procedures. By following these classroom requests, you show respect towards not only your fellow students but towards yourself as well.
Classrom Rules:
Be prepared for class. Please bring notebook or binder and a pencil every day.
Listen and follow directions. (They are there for a reason!)
Raise your hand before speaking or leaving your seat.
Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
Respect your classmates and teacher at all times. (Treat others the way you want to be treated!)
Obey all school wide rules. (They are there to make you a better person and student!)
Classroom Procedures:
Each class will begin with a Starter.
Remain at your assigned seat unless otherwise instructed by me.
Remain in your desks until I dismiss you.
Raise your hand if you want to share your ideas with others.
Complete the work assigned to you in a timely manner, there is lots to be done!
Consequences:
1st time rule is broken: Warning
2nd time rule is broken: Lunch Detention
3rd time rule is broken: Call home to parent or guardian.
