October Newsletter
From the desk of the Principal
Dear Parents, Grandparents, and Guardians,
It is hard to believe that the first nine weeks grading period will end on Thursday, October 19th. Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, November 1st. Please review your child’s MAP scores, achievement and goals with him or her on a regular basis. It is so important that children know how important you think their education is for them to reach their goals.
Teachers will be conducting parent conferences on Monday, October 9th. If you have not met with your child’s teacher, please contact the teacher this week to schedule a time to discuss your child’s achievement, goals, and strategies that will support your child’s growth.
Our teachers and staff continue to collaborate and plan instructional lessons and activities to teach, remediate, and enrich every student at Lesslie. If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
We believe in working together with families to support each student. I encourage each of you to attend our Math Day on Wednesday, October 18th from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. We will start in the morning in the media center to prepare you for observing a math workshop lesson in your child’s grade level. The observed lesson may not be in your child’s classroom. Parents will be observing one teacher on each grade level. Please RSVP so we can plan accordingly.
A special thank you to Mrs. Ramet for coordinating our Math Day!
Our next PTO and School Improvement Council meetings will be held on Monday, October 16th. Please come out to provide your input on how to make Lesslie even better. The joint PTOSIC meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. We will be reviewing our school’s data at the SIC meeting.
Mrs. Freemon, our school nurse, will be on Wheel of Fortune on Thursday, October 19th at 7:00 p.m. Please tune in and see her represent Lesslie well!
Children First,
Seberina Myles, Ed. S.

Character Traits
We are working to develop strong character in our students! Each month our school highlights one character trait and the trait for October is responsibility--taking ownership of your words, thoughts, and actions. To encourage this development in our students, we are presenting character awards to one student in each class on a quarterly basis at our recognition assemblies. Students will get an opportunity to vote for a peer who is demonstrating the respective monthly character trait.
School-wide Character Education
This school year at Lesslie we will continue with our school-wide character education/anti-bullying program entitled Bucket Fillers. The concept of bucket filling is simple: Everyone carries aninvisible bucket thatholds our good thoughts and feelings. When our buckets are full, we feel happy and when our buckets are empty, we feel sad. This program is based on the book Have you Filled a Bucket Today: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids by Carole McLoud. The author presents a wonderful concept that is easily understood by children. Students will learn that they can fill others’ buckets by saying and doing things that are respectful, kind, considerate, and caring. They also learn that when they are mean, inconsiderate, uncaring, or disrespectful they dip into buckets and remove those good feelings. We want to encourage students to be conscious of the way they treat others, whether it’s at home, school, or out in the community. We will recognize our “Bucket Fillers” quarterly. Students and staff members will be able to recognize others who have filledtheir buckets by completing a bucket filler card. Each child will receive a bucket filler sticker, a certificate, and have their pictures taken.
Watch Dog Dads

This volunteer program is for any male role model or father figure in his/her life including fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, and godfathers. Red Ribbon Week
October is our month set aside to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is a campaign founded by the National Family Partnership to bring awareness to the impact of drugs and to encourage drug prevention activities. It is nationally recognized and observed at most schools across the nation. We will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week at Lesslie during the week of October 23rd-27th with a week full of great activities for our students and staff. I will be teaching classroom guidance lessons on drug/alcohol awareness and personal safety for all students, peer pressure and decision-making for 4th grade and 5th grade students. Pleas check out redribbonweek.org to learn more information about Red Ribbon Week, activities that you can do with your children at home, and a cool contest for families with great prizes!
