Room 18 Updates
February 8th, 2016
What have we been up to?
We are midway through Chapter 6, Lesson 7! We are applying our fraction skills to find fractional parts of a number! We have one more lesson before we spend some time sharpening our fraction skills by doing Chapter Review!
Please look for graded math assignments that are coming home. I highly encourage students to "fix up" their work and resubmit it for a better grade!
We are also noticing that our Math notebooks that we use to take notes and practice our skills in are RUNNING OUT! Most students are in need of a second notebook for math... check with your kiddo! (It doesn't have to be blue!)
Math Facts
Math facts are an important tool that help us become more efficient in our math practice. Please continue to study math facts on a regular basis. Using old quizzes that come home in the Data Binder are a great way to start!
Spelling
Spelling will be business as usual this week! Spelling list will come home today on the homework packet! If your child is in the vocabulary study group (yellow), please don't be alarmed that they do not have 10 spelling words each week. Their word study target is a little different than those children who are sorting word patterns.
Reading
I recently came across a helpful tool for helping our kiddos look up AR books at home! They won't be able to take tests at home using this tool, but now they can read at home knowing they are working toward their goal!
Use this link to look up level, points and AR info about books you have at home!
Inquiry
We have been learning a TON of new information about Mexican migrant workers in the 1930's through the story of Esperanza Ortega.
We have been sharpening our vocabulary and comprehension skills through the novel study activity that is accompanying our read aloud. We are doing a majority of the novel study together; however there are important pieces the students are required to complete on their own. Please ask your 4th grader if they are caught up in their novel study packet!
Data Binders
I am very impressed with the way the students have utilized their Data Binders in the first half of the school year! It is very exciting to see their individual growth charted and tracked over time! Please continue to review your child's data on a weekly basis and write them an encouraging note on the Parent Signature page! Your support means the world to them!
During this quarter, I would like parents to be involved more on the goal setting page. I will send a blank goal page home and it will give you an opportunity to discuss your child's weekly goals with them and help them to set meaningful, reachable goals!
IXL Super Bowl Showdown!
I am SO proud of everyone for their hard work during the IXL Super Bowl Showdown!
We had a great time celebrating our hard work on Friday, during our Super Bowl party!
Our MVP's from last week were:

2. Nathan- 3 hours and 14 minutes!
3. Tanner- 2 hours and 59 minutes!
Our OVERALL MVP's were:
Nathan- 10 hours and 30 minutes

Valentine Read-a-Thon
Students are encouraged to wear their PJs, bring a pillow and blanket and LOTS of favorite books! They are also welcome to bring snacks to munch through the day!
We will still have a traditional Valentine exchange, so please have your child bring a Valentine card for each classmate!
Please use this list to write cards ---> Room 18 Student List
