SPOTLIGHT SESSION
National Poetry Month
Presented by Old Jail Art Center

Celebrate National Poetry Month this April! Explore Acrostic, Haiku, and Shape poetry through an artistic investigation. This is an excellent opportunity to connect language arts and visual thinking strategies in your classroom. Using sensory details and descriptive wording, students will compose three poems inspired by works of art in the museum collection. Each student will create a tri-fold poetry booklet, complete with his or her own compositions and images from the museum collection.

Astronomy Day with McDonald Observatory! Observe the Sun with a Telescope in Your Classroom!

Celebrate National Astronomy Day with UT McDonald Observatory during this special interactive video conference! Marc Wetzel and your students will take a brief helicopter tour of the UT McDonald Observatory, visit huge research telescopes, make live telescope observations of our star - the Sun - with telescopes equipped with special video cameras and solar filters, complete a Student Sun Drawing Sheet, and learn about the solar features they observe on the sun by watching unique science demonstrations. Telescope views will be real-time; in case of inclement weather or equipment problems, recorded views will be provided.
SEA the Difference: Saltwater Fish and Invertebrate Identification
Grades: 6-12

Properly identify common fish and invertebrates found in Texas bays and the Gulf of Mexico. Learn about basic anatomy, adaptations, habitat preference, life history, and how to use a dichotomous key.

Artistic Adventures

Get students ready for summer adventures with this expedition into the Amon Carter’s permanent collection. Travel with us and explore locations near and far. Encounter the experiences, ideas, and places that inspired artists’ creative processes. Meet Carter Community Artists Christopher Blay and Arnoldo Hurtado and learn about how their travels influence their art.

Everything in our Universe moves and interacts, and forces play a major role in that movement. With giant cannons, a hovercraft, and other crazy demonstrations, Unseen Forces investigates the relationship between force and motion and explains how these unseen forces are at work in our daily lives.
National Wildflower Week

Students will explore the history of National Wildflower Week and view works of art from the museum collection that spotlight these beautiful plants.
Students will discuss the important role that wildflowers and native plants serve in environment conservation.
Students will enjoy a reading of Miss Lady Birds Wildflowers, and learn of the former First Lady's efforts to replant native flowers in her home state of Texas. Following the reading, each student will begin work on his or her own Wildflower Journal.
