A special thank you to our Music teacher, Mrs. Natalie Evans for leading this club along with support from Mrs. Tow, Mrs. Higginbotham, and Mrs. Kelley. The students and teachers worked countless hours to practice, prepare, create sets, and rehearse. They did an amazing job on all 3 performances this week!

News from nurse felecia

As we continue in this cold and flu season, we need your help. If your child is diagnosed with the flu by a doctor, please let Nurse Felecia know. She reports those cases to our district nurse.

As always, remember that children need to stay home if they are running fever or vomiting. Children need to be fever free and/or have not vomited for 24 hours without medication before coming back to school. This helps minimize the number of illnesses our students are sharing with each other!

Pre-Registration for Pre-K has begun! We hope to be awarded two classroom grants next year.

PreK registration is now through March 31st. Go to the Hoover Website for more information.

Greystone GEMS Team Presents at Hoover GEMS Expo

The Greystone Girls Engaged in Math and Science (GEMS) team did a great job presenting their project at the Hoover GEMS Expo on Saturday, February 1st! The GEMS club is a state-wide initiative to give girls more opportunities to explore their interests in math, science, and engineering. Our GEMS team chose to study energy and chain reactions. The girls researched Rube Goldberg as well as types of energy and simple/complex machines and displayed this research on a trifold board. As a final challenge, the students worked to create a Rube Goldberg chain reaction machine. This proved to be a challenging endeavor with many opportunities for improvement. Check out their final Rube Goldberg machine by watching the video below. Girls in GEMS teams from around Hoover got together on February 1st to share their research, listen to amazing speakers, and participate in hands on science and math challenges. It was an inspiring event!

Genius Hub Community Volunteers

Big picture

Dear Parents,

Last year, we worked hard to change an underutilized area of our school into a place where students can learn from our community members. We need your help! You have talents, areas of interest, and exciting things that you do that students would love to learn. This could include a hobby or craft, a book club, an interesting job, a helpful skill such as organization or presenting, or even just something fun! For example, last year we had community members present on math games, photography tips, playing a unique instrument, filming movies, becoming a surgeon, commercial banking, etc.

The Genius Hub needs you during the months of March to May to volunteer to work with a small group of 6-8 students for 30-40 minutes and teach them something that you love or that inspires you. You can do this once a month if you are interested in coming more than once. Once we get your name through our form, we will contact you to set up a time to come. This will be a great way to help our school teach students innovative, creative, and practical ideas that can help them in life. To sign up to volunteer in our Genius Hub, click the following link:

Please feel free to forward this link to community members who might be interested in sharing their expertise but might not be a parent of a Greystone student.
