Counseling Connection
Mr. Schibley-School Counselor
Welcome Back!
Welcome Back!
Hello and welcome to a brand new school year!
My name is Eric Schibley and I am the school counselor at Drake and Whitney Elementary Schools. This is my twentieth year in education. Many of you I have met or corresponded with and many more of you I hope to meet this year. As the school counselor, my driving goal is to offer students help and support to insure their ability to succeed academically, personally, socially, and in terms of their future. Several programs and services are offered through the counseling department. If you are unfamiliar with them and would like to know more, please feel free to call or email me. My contact information is at the bottom of the page.
Below you will find an outline of programming that will take place during the first quarter of the school year. I am looking forward to working with the students and becoming more involved in the school community. Here's to making 2015-2016 a year of growing, learning, and loving life.
First Quarter Counseling Programs
New Student Small Groups
Adjusting to a new school can be difficult. I will meet with students who are new to Drake and Whitney this year in small groups. We will discuss their thoughts and feelings about changing schools, what they miss about their old school, and what they have learned to like at their new school.
Counselor Introduction
Each year I visit all classrooms to introduce myself and remind students that I am available to help. During these meetings I explain my role and invite students to ask questions about what I am available to help with. Each student receives a "Helping Hand" card with my name to remind them throughout the year that I am there. I encourage them to tape or glue it to the inside of their assignment notebook. Making students aware of my role increases the chance of them seeking help when it is needed.
Anti-Bullying - 4th Grade Lessons
As a part of the guidance curriculum I will visit all fourth grade classrooms once a week for six weeks. During these lessons students learn the definition of bullying, types of bullying behaviors, how to avoid being involved in bully situations, how to de-escalate a bullying situation, and how to help someone who is being bullied by others. The knowledge and skills taught are meant to increase students' ability to interact peacefully and respectfully with others.
Kelso's Choice - 2nd Grade Lessons
Second grade students learn about problem solving and conflict resolution with Kelso, a knowledgeable frog friend. Kelso and I will visit second grade classrooms once a week for six weeks. We will teach how to decide if a problem is small enough to handle between friends or big enough to need the help of an adult. We will also discuss the difference between tattling and getting help. This program teaches students that we always have a choice when faced with a problem. They will learn nine ways to solve a small problem. Look for more information coming home with your second grade student in September!
