This week we continue to practice our Daily 5 rotations! The students have spent a lot of time learning about the stations, how they work and the expectations during rotation time. I will also be doing DRAs in the classroom to determine the student’s instructional reading levels. Through reading this week, I will begin introducing different genres of books. We will familiarize ourselves with the different types and how to distinguish between the genres.

The students have been doing a great job with writing about personal experiences in their Wednesday writing folders. I am excited to read all of their fantastic writing this week when they complete them. After celebrating our authors and the hard work they have done, we will focus on some grammar concepts. We will be learning about the 4 types of sentences and what makes a complete sentence.

This week the students will continue to practice rotating through daily math stations. During these stations and through class lessons, the students will review foundational math skills such as addition and subtraction, problem solving, and solving story problems. We will also continue to engage in graphing activities and interpreting data.

Early this week we will finish up with science safety tools. The students will be bringing a study guide home in their Friday Folder. They can use this to study for the test that will be given next Friday. Later this week we will begin the study of force and motion and continue it for the next few weeks. This concept allows for lots of hands on learning experiences and fun experiments. The students will become familiar with the effects of force and motion.

Social Studies

In social studies this week we will spend time learning about good citizens in our country’s history. We will also discuss some important American symbols such as our flag, the Statue of Liberty and Uncle Sam. Time will also be spent learning about our very own star spangled banner. The students will learn of its origin as well as the meaning behind certain qualities of the flag.
