Superintendent Update - January 18, 2021
Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Today we celebrate the legacy of the great humanitarian and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service, to encourage all of us to volunteer to improve our communities.
This past year has shone a light on the persistent racial and economic inequities in our country. From the violent death of George Floyd on May 25th to the storming of the Capitol building on January 6th, we - and our children - have witnessed the worst of human behavior. We all have the power to educate ourselves and each other about inequities and dedicate ourselves to a more just and peaceful society.
Due to the rapid spread of the virus, we have had to reduce our staff presence at schools. I ask that we each do our part to keep our communities safe and healthy. Our schools have always been safe places for our students to learn, explore, and thrive. Opening our schools will not be possible until the virus case rate is reduced significantly.
I will be sharing more information about this at the January 21 Board Meeting. To join the board meeting, please complete the google form online at https://www.lawndalesd.net/board.
Meet Gabriela Gonzalez
Gabriela Gonzalez is the Community Liaison at Anderson Elementary, where her role is to support her parents in taking leadership in their child's education as well as in their lives. In addition she collaborates with the District and Community Liaisons at other schools to provide her families with educational workshops that will benefit them and encourage our families to participate and grow.
Ms. Gonzales worked at the Richstone Family Center for over 10 years. Her first job there was as a Program Specialist that assisted in home visitation programs. Soon after she became a Case Manager, which consisted of her assisting her families with referrals according to their needs, home visits, and educating parents with resourceful information in their communities.

Ms. Gonzalez is also part of Americorp and Up2Us Sports, where she supports youth in sports based development and coaching. Learn About Alternative Dispute Resolution
The field of education is filled with technical terms, detailed reports, and federal guidelines. However, one of the major components that isn’t discussed is the relationship between the family and the school in their effort to best serve the student. However, there are bound to be moments when the district and family do not see eye-to-eye.
In those moments, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) may be appropriate. ADR is a service that the SELPA provides to individuals, giving them an opportunity to resolve disagreements in a safe, positive, and efficient manner. This presentation will outline the ADR services and fill you in on how the SELPA can help during IEP meetings.
To RSVP, please email Crystal Lopez at Crystal_Lopez@swselpa.org and you will receive a zoom link to connect to the meeting.
