Information/Updates about Westerville Central High School
Message from Mr. Lanier
I wanted to share the welcome back message that I announced to our students our first day back from break.
"Welcome back to everyone from what I hope was a restful and relaxing break. We missed you all while you were gone during that time. It is tradition to come up with New Year’s resolutions with the turn of the calendar. I know each of you is coming back to school with resolutions to do something better...the challenge is to be 'resolute' in your resolutions. Take them day by day and one hour at a time. Stay focused on making the resolution a new habit. Habits are built over time, both good and bad.
Things to think about to build good academic habits:
Dedicate 1 hour a day to step away from your screens to focus on schoolwork. Make sure that hour occurs at the same time each day so that you become used to it.
Spend time in that hour to complete your daily assignments; no daily assignment to do? Take a look at upcoming work and preview information that you will cover in the next day’s class.
Dedicate a portion of this time to study for upcoming tests; try not to cram for exams; take small spoonfuls of information rather than drown in a waterfall of facts.
Make it a goal to commit an act of kindness for someone else on a daily basis. It can be as small as picking up someone else’s trash; opening a door for someone else; giving someone a smile and asking how their day is going. The point is to pay kindness forward and create a ripple that will improve the community.
Share your resolutions with a friend; have that person be your accountability buddy to keep you honest in your efforts.
Good luck to all in making this semester the best academic experience you’ve had in your career."
Strong academic performance comes when the student feels supported and that they are safe to take risks that will stretch their learning. Stay focused on your child's learning and ask them questions about their day that focus on what they've learned, not necessarily on their grades. Make it a family resolution to have a positive discussion about school at least once a day. I hope everyone is able to make their resolutions come to fruition.
Let's make 2019 a great year.

Graduation Update
Students at Central in the cohort of 2019 who have not met their testing point graduation requirement will work with a graduation coach this semester to ensure that they access the two pathways they need to graduate. All students must meet all credit requirements set forth by the district in addition to the testing points or the pathways to graduation.
We are excited to work with our students to help them earn their high school diplomas and prepare them for life after high school.
Senior Graduation Forms Coming Soon: Due March 1
Senior pledge forms will be distributed to students in their homeroom next week. The forms must be returned to Mrs. Reed in the main office by March 1st.
Pledge forms are an essential piece of graduation information.
- Verify spelling of graduates name
- Indicate your intention to participate in graduation
- Select a single presenter
Please remind your seniors to take care of this as quickly as possible in order to make the graduation planning process run smoothly.
School Safety Corner
Notable items:
1. Central has a school safety committee made up of administrators, teachers, and other staff members in the building. The committee is also interested in adding outside parent representation to this committee as well. Please contact Mr. Adams (adamsa@westerville.k12.oh.us) if you are interested in serving on this committee as well. We have room for up to 2 parents on this committee.
2. Central is piloting a school safety phone app that will allow for staff members to take attendance quickly and share it with the administrators during a drill or an emergency. The Navigate Prepared App was purchased by the district and provides staff members with a way to communicate during an event; take attendance; and have access to safety procedures. We will begin using the app with a small group of teachers to work out the logistics of how it operates and then roll it out to the full staff before the end of the school year. We're excited at Central to be leaders in the district when it comes to using this new technology.
3. Central will run and enhanced safety drill in January. This drill will be an evacuation drill that occurs during a class change. The safety committee and the staff have worked on some ideas about logistics of how to move students to areas where attendance can be taken quickly. This enhanced drill creates a more realistic situation in the case a sudden evacuation event occurs.
ID Badge Reminder
Replacement id's are available in the school counseling office for a nominal fee of $5. See Mrs. Hughes if you need a new id.

b. Illness in the family - Medical excuses may be requested
c. Quarantine of the Home - Health Department statement requested
d. Death of a relative
e. Work in the home - Must be approved by principal
f. Observance of a religious holiday
g. Emergencies - Must be approved by principal
h. Family Vacation - A "Pre-Excused Absence Request" form is required
three days before the first day of absence
I wish all Warhawk families a safe, productive, and healthy 2019.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Brenning
Attendance Info
Students who attend school regularly will experience greater success than students who have poor attendance. Helping students with attendance issues is a team effort that includes the family, school counselors, administration and health care providers. Proactive communication around attendance will help the team work together to support students in their efforts to be successful in their academic experience.
Please find some helpful hints from our attendance clerk below to help get the school year started off on the right foot:
Attendance Office Phone #: 614-797-6820
Please call when you know that your student is going to be absent from school for any reason.
Appointments
Occasionally students have a medical or dental appointment during school hours. In the event that such an appointment is necessary, the following procedure must be used or that student will be considered unexcused: A note from the parent/guardian prior to the appointment is appropriate. A phone call/voice mail message at least 1 hour prior to the student’s necessary dismissal time is acceptable. Parental/guardian calls and notes must be specific about the reason for and the time of the appointment and the approximate time of return. Prior to leaving the building, the student must stop in the attendance office to sign out. Upon return, the student must sign in to the attendance office and bring verification of his/her doctor, dentist, or court appointment.
Thanks for your help in helping us track your child's attendance.
Communication
Central will use the following means of communication throughout the year:
* Daily announcements are found on our webpage.
* School Messenger: School wide messages will be delivered via phone calls and emails through our School Messenger account.
* Newsletter: I will send a monthly newsletter (Warhawk News) updating Warhawk Nation about the great things our students and staff are doing during the school year. The newsletter is electronic and will be emailed and distributed via Twitter.
* Remind 101: To receive text messages directly, consider signing up for Central's Remind 101 service. It's easy...text @6k39d7 to 81010.
* Twitter: Consider following me on Twitter @ThomasWLanier. I share lots of fun events and great pics about Warhawk Nation via Twitter. Be sure to tweet @ThomasWLanier and use the hashtag, #hawkssoar when you see great things that our Warhawks are doing.
