Wonderful Zarrow Family,
It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I am able to share some more information and resources that will support your child’s education. At ZIS we offer a great program with a great model that helps support the idea of becoming bilingual and biliterate. This is often a goal that many teachers, across America, have for their English Language Learners (ELL). Did you know that your child is also a language learner? I like to call them Spanish Language Learners (SLL). So often, we do not realize that the same types of researched based strategies would work for SLLs and ELLs alike. The reason that these strategies do work is because they are all based on second language acquisition research. Below is a link to a great website that is set up for ELLs (and SLLs). I hope that you enjoy the resources and that you feel empowered in being even more involved in your child’s education. You all are so wonderful and together we will change the world. J

PTA News
Zarrow Families,
WOW! We are almost to October! Our Spanish exchange students have been here for almost three weeks, our students have been in Spain for almost two weeks, and all of these ambassadors are having amazing experiences as they are immersed with families in a whole new culture. If you are hosting an exchange student from either Spain or Costa Rica, thank you for opening your homes. I enjoy seeing everything they are experiencing while here in the U.S. As my family walks this hosting duty with you, I can say it's not always easy, but it is so rewarding for all of us. And, we've made great new friends in Spain, that I believe we will continue to stay in touch with.
Thank you for your amazing support of our fall fundraisers! The Read-a-thon far exceeded our expectations both in donations and minutes read. Also, you surpassed our requested 600 recipes for the Zarrow Cookbook. Thank you for making these fundraisers such a success. Mostly, thank you to Anne Gilbert, Fall Fundraiser Chair, for all of her time and excitement to ensure success. Because of all that was raised with the Read-a-thon, all field trips for all grades are paid for! You've also helped pay for Jr. Great Books to be offered to our students later this year.
The PTA helps support many activities in our school. One thing we also do is provide sponsorship to the Cub Scouts, Pack 91. Led by Pack Master Rebecca Allison, many parents volunteer to help lead their meetings. They also perform service projects on school grounds as well as in the neighborhood. If you are the parent of a cub scout, thank you for helping ensure these meetings happen! Cub scouts are currently selling popcorn to raise money for their budget and the Girl scouts are also selling candy and nuts to raise money as well. If you're able, please help support these future leaders.
Thank you again for your support and participation. We are off to a great start to the school year!

A Word from the Counselor
This month the life skill is RESPONSIBILITY. What is responsibility? Responsibility means doing your part. Responsibility is one of the things that shows a person has good character. Responsible people help out and do their part. Responsible people help their family, friends and teachers.
Being responsible means doing the right thing even when the right thing is hard to do. When we think before we say or do anything, that’s being responsible.
In conclusion, being responsible is where others can count on you when nobody is looking; It is making smart choices. It is setting a good example; It is remembering that all our actions have consequences. It is being responsible for ourselves. Some other examples of being responsible are doing chores, completing homework, getting a good night’s sleep, eating a nutritious breakfast, helping with little brother or sister and feeding and watering the pet. These are a few examples. Hopefully you can come up with more.
I am grateful to be a part of all the good things at Zarrow!
