Special Education Foundation
Adaptive and Assistive Equipment: The Special Education Foundation (SEF) is able to provide specialized equipment to students with disabilities up to age 21. The aim of the SEF is to enhance the education or the independence of students or to improve their quality of life. Through grants, the Foundation is able to help provide requests for specialized equipment, based on financial need, which includes:
● augmentative communication devices
● adaptive equipment
● hearing aids
● eyeglasses
Applications are accepted year-round and are initiated by the student’s teacher. Learn more about SEF’s Adaptive and Assistive Equipment program and how to apply.
Community Partner Highlight
PEERS® (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills) is a 12-16 week social skills program for children, teens or young adults with autism. In this program, individuals are engaged in learning real-life skills for connecting with others, as well as building and maintaining friendships. Parents/Caregivers will also participate in the program and will be taught how to support and assist their child/young adult in making and keeping friends by coaching and providing feedback during weekly homework assignments.
This program is offered to three age groups:
Children’s Friendship Training: 3rd-5th graders
PEERS: Middle and high school aged students
PEERS for Young Adults: Individuals ages 18+ who are no longer in high school
New sessions will begin in May and August 2023.
A pre-program assessment to determine eligibility is required. Funding options include DDRB, DMH and Private Pay.

SSD Parent Advisory Council Meeting
Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is comprised of families advising and collaborating to improve the education, confidence, and social outcomes of each student served by SSD. SSD's PAC works closely with the SSD Board of Education, Governing Council, and District administration to provide valuable input and feedback from the parent perspective.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Key Contributor Award
Congratulations to Kyna McCoy! Kyna is a SSD para at North Kirkwood Middle School and was announced as Kirkwood's Key Contributor for Physical, Mental, Social, and Emotional Support for our Kirkwood kids. Kyna has such a positive, calming presence in a classroom. She assists students emotionally so that they have independence and can participate in the lesson. She is patient, kind and cheerful. She shows true patience and love for all the students she supports. Thanks for all you do, Kyna!
Key to the Classroom Award
Congratulations to Jamie Rose! Jamie is a SSD teacher at Tillman Elementary and was announced as the recipient of the SSD Key to the Classroom Award. This award celebrates the profound effect teachers have on the lives of their students and colleagues. Jamie is a powerful and dedicated special education teacher with many tools in her toolbox that she shares with coworkers and students. She makes a powerful impact on the loves of students everyday. Tillman is lucky to have her as an educator and advocate for students.
Lasting Impressions Award
Congratulations to Rebecca Yust! Becky is a SLP at Tillman Elementary and was announced as the winner of the Lasting Impressions Award. This award celebrates SSD staff who positively impacts students through support outside of the classroom. Becky goes above and beyond to ensure her students advance in their skills. She is a leader that helps guide the special education staff by maintaining and modeling positive relationships with all staff and students. Her positive and professional attitude along with her dedication make her an asset to the school community.
