Red River Newsletter
October 2018
Greetings RRHS Parents and/or Guardians,
In my first year at Red River as Associate Principal, things are off to a great start and I am excited to join the Red River staff and administration team of Dr. Kris Arason, Mr. Darin Walters, and Mr. Tyler Nelson. It has been a privilege meeting and building relationships with the students and staff during the first month and a half.
In September, Dr. Arason, Mr. Walters, Mr. Nelson, Officer Skari, and I met with all the freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. We reviewed the student handbook, discussed rules, policies, and expectations, and informed them of all the extra and co-curricular opportunities we have to offer here at Red River High School. Counselors, Mrs. Ripplinger and Mr. Phelps, addressed the junior class on upcoming testing dates and other academic opportunities.
As in years past, Mr. Nelson has invited members of our junior and senior classes to be mentors for our freshmen. They receive training and are prepared for their mentorship. The students have small group discussions that include topics such as character, leadership, teamwork, and school pride. The mentor meetings take place every other week during the first semester. The mentors become a role model and resource for the members of the group.
Through the leadership of the counseling office, the program Sources of Strength (SoS), is in its second full year. The program is designed "to harness the power of peer social networks to change unhealthy norms and culture, ultimately preventing suicide, bullying and substance abuse." SoS provides multiple sources of support and is strengthened through student leadership. SoS is adding a new program, called the "Welcome Crew". All new students that enroll at Red River High School after the school year has begun will be provided with a student mentor to welcome them and guide them through the school day the first couple of weeks to become acclimated to Red River High School.
This year's hashtag is #DaretoRide and we are expressing that message by challenging students and staff to develop a growth mindset and step outside of their comfort zone to succeed. We encourage you to take part by supporting your child in their academics and becoming involved in one or more of our 60 clubs and activities offered at Red River. As always, we appreciate your involvement in your son's/daughter's high school experience as we look forward to a year of growth in the 2018-19 school year.
In 'Rider Pride',
Tony Bina
Associate Principal
Congratulations to the students who were nominated by staff members this month.
This program is designed to recognize students for their excellence in classroom
attitude, involvement in school activities, and citizenship. Outstanding academic
achievement is not a requirement, but academic effort is a strong consideration.
Students may be honored only one time during their high school career.
