What are we learning?
This week we will be focusing on setting up our Reader's and Writer's workshop. Our Reader's workshop consists of a mini-lesson where a new skill is taught or previous skills are reviewed. This week we are learning about story structure, central idea, and characters. During our 50 minute small group time we will be working on setting up our Daily 5 Literacy rotations: Read to Self, Word Work, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading, and Read to Someone. Students will work on literacy skills while building stamina and independence. During Writer's Workshop we begin our time with a mini-lesson. This week we will be focusing on what good writer's do. Then students will have a chance to practice writing while the teacher will conference with students as they write.
Social Studies- We will be working on how rules work, who makes rules and why they are important.
Word Work-We are working on the pattern of words that are: consonants, vowel, consonants (CVC). Example CAT, DOG, and MAN. We will be look at the letters being placed in beginning , middle and end of words. Our weekly sight words are: can, come, do, has, he. On Friday we will give a test where students will be expected to read and write the words.
Handwriting- We will learn and practice how to write letters with proper strokes and pencil grip. This week we will review letters Aa & Dd.
Math-
Routines:we start our math time each day with 5-10 minute routines to warm up and build number sense. We will practice counting and subitizing numbers with activities such as quick images, start w/ get to, and number talks. We will also practice
IPS: Each day we spend 15-20 minutes doing intentional problem solving (IPS) where students build problem solving skills by solving various types of word problems showing their thinking in 3 or more ways. After students have worked through the problem we discuss how to solve the problem and the strategies used. Student should be able to explain how they are solving the problem.
Math Focus Lesson: The Math focus lesson is our 60 minute Math block where we will be learning Math skills and concepts. It consists of a mini-lesson and math centers where students will be able to practice and develop the concepts learned during the mini-lesson, or spiral previous taught skills. This week we are working on developing independence in Math centers and learning about addition and subtraction situations within 10.
Related Activities to try at home:
Counting Activities- Your child can count collections of objects. Many first graders are able to count quantities of about 20 or 30 accurately. With your help, your child can count even higher.
Together, count sets of objects around the house such as silverware, pennies, or collections of cars or animals. You can also look in books, magazines, and newspapers for pictures that your child can count.Math and Literature- Here are some great counting books you can find in your local library and read with your child. Have your child count the objects on each page, and see what mathematical concepts your child discovers.

Science-We are starting to look at Scientist and what they do. We are working on science tools and how our sense help us observe the world around us. We will be exploring sight, hearing, smell and touch. We are going to mention taste but will not be tasting anything in this segment for safety reasons.

Meals and Snacks
Snacks
We will do snacks after we return from LAMP in the afternoon-we have no more 5 to 7 minutes for snack. Your child can have one snack that is on the healthy side. We would like it to be healthy-pretzels, goldfish, kixs cereal, Cheerios, granola, fruit, raisins and fruit leather. Please try to stay away from potato chips and other foods with negative food value.
Please keep it small- please use snack size bag or small containers. Remember lunchtime is over and dinner is not to far away.

We have some students that have peanut, and severe sun butter allergies.
