Vose Owl Notes
Family Newsletter - November 2021
Vose Families,
Happy fall!!!! We are buzzing around here with goals being set, creative art & academic learning opportunities and lots of social skill practice. We have added some pictures below from our school to share a little with our families of all the amazing adventures at Vose.
Here's some important info:
- Change in instructional days in November This was sent out through our superintendent at the end of October but we want to make sure everyone sees it.
BSD has been impacted by a nationwide labor shortage. Currently, we’re down 250-300 substitute teachers and 400 classified substitutes, as well as many full-time positions. This shortage is putting a considerable strain on our entire system. Mechanics and dispatchers are driving buses on a daily basis; teachers are forgoing planning time to fill in for absent colleagues; principals are spending their days in classrooms as teachers. Our staff is overextended and in need of some relief.
For that reason, we’re altering the school schedule in late November:
- Monday, November 22: No school for students; professional development day for licensed staff; work day for classified staff (Previously, this day was an instructional day.)
- Tuesday, November 23: No school for students or staff (Previously, this day was an instructional day.)
- Wednesday, November 24-Friday, November 26: No school
- Monday, November 29: Regular school day for students and staff; A/Odd Day (Previously, this day was a no student/staff professional day.)
The result of the calendar change is one less instructional day in favor of a Wellness Day for our students and staff. While this change may pose a challenge for some, I hope that you will agree that a focus on wellness is needed at this time.
- Parent-Teacher Conferences: Thank you so much for connecting with us about where your child is at and what they are working toward. We hope you found that opportunity helpful and informative regarding the best ways to support your children.
We are so grateful for our hard-working students and dedicated staff, as well as our supportive families! You are all a part of why Vose is such a special school community!

Character Traits of the Month
We are also honoring Native American Heritage Month in November.
DECEMBER's Character Trait is EMPATHY. We show empathy when we try to understand how someone else is feeling and understand their situation.
At Vose, our teachers and staff integrate lessons and activities to emphasis, highlight and teach about each character trait and heritage month. We encourage families to also tell stories and share examples of these character traits and heritage months at home.
Please click on the calendar below to be able to view & print the MOST CURRENT district's 2021-22 calendar in English, Spanish and 7 other languages!
Important Arrival & Dismissal Reminders:
We appreciate everyone working together to ensure our arrival and dismissal are safe and orderly. Remember, that with Daylight Savings Time and rainy weather, it's also important to be extra careful in our parking lot and neighborhood streets. There are processes, changes and updates that are important to follow including to please remember to:
- Drop students off after 7:45am since there is no adult supervision outside until 7:45am and the school would not be liable if a student is injured
- Wear masks at all times
- Try to maintain social distancing as much as possible
- Drive slowly in our parking lot, cars and little bodies are not a good match.
- Use all crosswalks and do not cut between cars or duck under flagging
- Follow instructions and guidance of school staff, especially at crosswalks
- Have students ride the bus if they have an assigned stop. Please know that the more parents who drive and walk to pick up their students, the more crowded and the longer it will take. If your child qualifies for riding the bus, we strongly encourage you to have them ride the bus if at all possible
- ALWAYS bring your Family Pick Up colored number card if you are picking up your child in a car or walking
- Take the time to teach your child their color and number so they know to look for it on the display TV screen in their classroom. Teachers will not release students unless they say they see their color/number on the display (indicating you have arrived at the school)
- Stay in the area of your youngest child's grade level if you are walking to pick-up and remind your older children to come to that designated grade level area. For example, if you have a Kindergartener and a 3rd grader, ask the 3rd grader to meet you in the Kindergarten area.
- Make sure students wear warm clothes and bring gloves, raincoats and/or umbrellas since it is likely they could be waiting outside to be picked up by car by parents for up to 10-15 minutes, depending on when parents plan to arrive at school in their car.
Thank you for your continued patience and flexibility as all 700+ students and LOTS of families are learning new processes all at the same time! We have seen a significant increase in parents driving for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Please help us with traffic and congestion by:
- walk or bike as often as possible
- please do not idle when parked or waiting because all of the toxic exhaust fumes go straight up and are often sucked into our building ventilation system on our roof
Here are the top five reasons for walking, biking, rolling or carpooling:
1. Fewer vehicles driving to school reduces traffic congestion and carbon emissions near schools and in our parking lots.
2. More people walking and rolling builds school community and makes routes safer.
3. Physical activity boosts kids’ readiness to learn and improves their physical and mental health.
4. Kids have fun with friends and bond with families while walking and rolling together.
5. Being outside builds independence and lifelong transportation skills.

We all want to ensure students get to their families safely while maintaining everyone's health and safety. Thank you for your cooperation and support!

Rainy Weather
Please ensure your child is dressed for rainy weather. If you need assistance with clothing, please schedule an appointment through Clothes for Kids (see information below) or contact our school social worker, Christina Maples at christina_maples@beaverton.k12.or.us or call at 503-346-2430.

TAG Nomination Process
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement in reading and/or math. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available on the link below. Completing this form gives our school TAG Committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of the form’s completion.
Please complete and return the Parent Information Form to your child’s teacher. Nomination forms are available on the TAG Website or below:
Parent TAG nomination form K-3
Parent TAG nomination form 4-8
Parent nomination forms are due on or before November 18th, 2021.
Important Information:
Holiday Support: If your family could use extra support with food and/or other supports, please reach out to our School Social Worker, christina_maples@beaverton.k12.or.us.
Cool Weather = Warmer Clothing: Since students have two outdoor recesses plus outdoor movement breaks each day and PE outside twice a week this fall, we strongly encourage students to dress for the weather, including wearing jackets with hoods, water proof/water resistant if possible since we do not have options for indoor recesses due to social distancing requirements.
Lost & Found: Please remind your student to check the Lost & Found regularly for lost items. We also recommend parents write your student's name on water bottles as well as tags on coats, sweatshirts, hats and other clothing. Even writing the last name helps make sure items get returned to your child.
Owl Wings: As a Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS) School, Vose staff strives to teach students our expectations and goals for them, and then positively reinforce them so they are encouraged to keep working and growing to improve in order to meet those expectations. One way we honor their efforts to distribute "Owl Wings" which are small pieces of paper to
New classroom addition to Vose: Even though our current building is only 4 years old, we have already outgrown the classroom spaces available. Therefore, we will have an addition built onto the back of the school, including a remodeling of our library space with 4 more classrooms added. Construction will start after Spring Break 2022. More info to come!
Birthdays: At Vose we celebrate student birthdays through song and/or recognition by classroom teachers and classmates. Families should know we do not allow individual parties, balloons or snacks delivered as these are distracting as well not being equitable or inclusive. Thank you in advance for respecting this policy.
