A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
As we finish the third week of Virtual Learning, I want to give a special Thank You to you, our parents, for your help and support in making this non-traditional way of educating our students a big success. I know that you always take a particular interest in your student’s education, but I believe that you have gone above and beyond in helping us during this difficult time. On behalf of the faculty, staff, counselors, and administrators, please accept this heartfelt Thank You.
Please take note, we will not be sending out progress reports this nine-weeks, but I encourage you to please monitor your students’ progress in INOW, and stay in close contact with the teachers, as they can help you with any issues you may have.
Senior Parents, please read the IMPORTANT SENIOR INFORMATION below for details regarding Senior turn-in of Chromebooks and Textbooks. Campus Recognition will also be available for students to pick up Graduation supplies, Cap and Gowns, and Graduation Cords. Our Bookkeepers will be available to collect any outstanding fees. The date will be Thursday, April 30, 2020, from 9 am to 3 pm.
It is my wish that you all stay safe and healthy.
Respectfully,
Peter L. Giangrosso
IMPORTANT SENIOR INFORMATION
There are still several seniors that have not completed the mandatory Senior Survey. Please keep in mind that this survey is important for each individual student as well as the school. Additionally, completion is required for students to receive their SPHS diploma. The data gathered from the survey will be the sole source used to send final transcripts and to organize programs and end-of-the-year ceremonies (senior awards, graduation, etc.). The absolute due date for survey completion is 3:35 on 4/24. The survey can be found at the following link:

A note from Hoover City Schools' Mental Health Specialist
How Can I Support My Child If They Are Experiencing Anxiety During COVID-19? Many causes or contributing factors can lead to anxiety and stress during COVID -19; social isolation, school work, uncertainty about the pandemic, etc. Here are some ways you can help: “Knowledge is power.” Make sure you have the facts from trusted groups like the CDC. Develop a routine that matches as close to what it was before we had to socially isolate. Listen and check in frequently with your child. Make sure you and your child practice self-care: get enough sleep, eat healthily, and exercise. Make sure to stay virtually connected. This is good for kids and adults. Speak with friends, family, teachers, counselors, and co-workers. Make plans for activities you can do together - watch a movie, go for a bicycle ride, go for a hike. Build activities into your weekly routine. Teach coping skills - deep breathing, walking, journaling, reading, drawing, etc. Be mindful of screen time. Too much information often causes anxiety and stress. Recognize when news or other media might be causing an increase in anxiety symptoms, and know that it is okay to unplug when needed Focus on the positive. Always reach out to your counselor if you need assistance. Counselors are still here and available to help students, parents, and families. Added to and adapted from NAMI, Child Mind Institute, and the CDC First Aid for Feelings An additional resource for parents of elementary students is a free downloadable workbook from the Yale Child Study Center called First Aid for Feelings. This is a workbook to help kids cope during the Coronavirus Pandemic. The workbook in English and Spanish can be found here: http://teacher.scholastic.com/education/coronavirusworkbook/
