Meet Mrs. Pinero
Hello Avery Families!
My name is Claire Long, soon to be Mrs. Claire Pinero, and I am the new 2nd Grade teacher at Avery Elementary School. I cannot express my excitement for getting to be a part of this Avery community! I am bringing to Avery with me a Bachelor's in Special Education & Elementary Education from Saint Louis University, a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, & 3 years of experience as a Special Education Resource Teacher for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade in Columbia, Illinois.
A little bit about myself... I am getting married on July 1st of this year to my wonderful fiance, Emilio Pinero. We also have a 1-year-old boxer puppy named Hazel. In my spare time, I love spending time with my family and friends, being outside, exercising, and traveling!
I cannot wait to get to know you all and I am very grateful to join this amazing Avery community!
Meet Ms. Sciaroni
Hi! My name is Brittany Sciaroni and I am excited about teaching Kindergarten this year at Avery! This is my fifth year in the Webster Groves School District but my first year at Avery! I have spent the last four years teaching preschool at Ambrose! I have my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Missouri - St. Louis. I am passionate about the importance of early childhood education and creating a positive classroom community for all of my students and their families. I enjoy reading, going to concerts, and spending time with my family and friends. I am looking forward to meeting everyone soon and starting my new journey at Avery!
Hi everyone! I'm Mike and I am incredibly excited to be your new nurse at Avery. I'm originally from Charleston, SC, but my family moved back to Webster to be closer to our extended family just in time for me to start 6th grade at Steger. After graduating Webster High in 2011, I joined the Army and became a combat medic. Towards the end of that chapter I graduated from Mizzou with a degree in Health Science. While my wife Kelly, also a Webster High alumna, finished pharmacy school in Indianapolis, I worked as a behavioral therapist for kids with autism. It was always our plan to move back home to Webster, and since moving wasn't a big enough switch, I also decided to go back to school to become a nurse. I started my nursing career at St. Louis Children's Hospital and am looking forward to working so close to home. We've recently found our dream house, a century home right next to Blackburn Park where we live with our cat, Squee, and our dog, Billy.
Webster Groves School District uses ParentSquare for school communication, primarily with email, text and app notifications. ParentSquare automatically generates an account for each parent, using their preferred email address and phone number. We encourage parents to access their accounts so they can download the mobile app and update their preferences on when and how they are notified.
Late Start Information
Beginning last school year, the Webster Groves School District added late start days to the school calendar.
Late start days will allow additional time for our teachers to use data and collaboratively plan to continue to address the needs of all of our students.
The schedule for late starts is below:
Late Start Supervision Program - 7:40am-8:50am
School Day Arrival Begins - 8:50am

Families who need help with student supervision on late start days can participate in a program available at each building. On Friday, July 28th the district sent out information for families to sign up for the late start supervision program. Registration will remain open until August 7th. Please see this email for additional details.
Members of the Avery staff will manage the Late Start Supervision Program, including instructional aides and substitute teachers. Families who participate in the morning Adventure Club Program will automatically be enrolled in the Late Start Supervision Program.

PTO "Buy-Out" is now the FUND-A-TEACHER campaign!
While the purpose has not changed, we've decided to change the name of this fundraiser to make it easier to understand. Each year our teachers spend hundreds of their own dollars to help make their classrooms feel like home for our kids. In an effort to help reimburse some of this tremendous cost, we ask that you make a donation to the Fund-a-Teacher campaign. ALL money raised gets divided up evenly among all of our classroom teachers. Our goal is to raise $10,000, which equates to about $250 for each classroom. If you have any questions about Fund-a-Teacher, please contact PTO at email@example.com. Thank you for your support!
Incoming K Play Dates
Come get to know incoming Kindergarten students at Avery! Popsicles will be provided. Please note, students and families will only have access to the Avery playground and not the building.
- Saturday, August 12, 9-11am @ Margaret Park
- Sunday, August 20th, 3:30pm @ Margaret Park
Meet the Teacher
Meet the Teacher will take place on Friday, August 18th from 8am-9am in the classrooms.
Students and families in grades K-2 are invited to drop off school supplies, visit with classmates, and talk with teachers. In order to maximize time in the classroom, we encourage the following schedule - of course if this does not work for you and your family - please come when you can during the timeframe.
- 8:00am-8:30am Families with last name starting with A-M
- 8:30am-9:00am Families with last name starting with N-Z
Students and families in grades 3-5 are invited to visit the classroom at the same time as the Jumpstart Conference. After dropping supplies, students can step into the hallway so the families can meet with the classroom teachers.

Avery Elementary School, North Bompart Avenue, Webster Groves, MO, USA
Starting this year, we are shifting our classroom parties to better reflect our curriculum. Instead of hosting parties on holidays that some may/may not celebrate, we have decided to shift classroom parties to recognize seasonal changes. This aligns nicely with science units on seasons and/or seasonal changes. Please note, other elementary schools in our district have or will be making this change as well.
This upcoming school year we will host classroom parties on:
Friday, September 22nd - Fall Party 1:45pm - 2:30pm (first day of fall is on Saturday, September 23rd)
Thursday, December 21st - Winter Party 1:45pm - 2:30pm
Thursday, March 14th - Spring Party 1:45pm - 2:30pm (first day of spring is on Tuesday, March 19th)
We will continue to maintain our standard that was established this school year that any food item brought in for the classroom party will be sent home with students for parents to determine if it is something their child can consume.
In addition, we are going to be requiring adults to RSVP for our classroom parties so that we can ensure the safety of our students and staff during parties. This will allow us to pre-sign in adults using our Raptor system. In order to sign into Raptor, we will need your license. Once you are signed into the system, we can pre-print your badge and send it home prior to parties. If you have not signed in previously, you will need to add extra time prior to the party so that we can get you signed in. We will send the RSVP form for the fall party out closer to the date.
We thank you so much for your partnership and understanding in this switch.

BUS TRANSPORTATION UPDATE
We are excited to share some significant news about bus transportation for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year.
Free bus transportation will be available to the following students:
- Students in elementary school: Free transportation will be provided if you live 1.5 miles or more from school.
- Students in middle and high school: Free transportation will be provided if you live 2 miles or more from school.
Families will be required to register for transportation, unless they already have done so for the 2023-2024 school year. Depending on the number of students who sign up, some students may have to be placed on a waiting list. Therefore, we encourage you to carefully consider whether you would like to have your student ride the bus to and from school on a daily basis.
Priority will be given to students who commit to riding the bus daily, both in the morning and afternoon. The deadline to register is August 6. Again, families with students who are eligible for free transportation will be notified next week.
If we receive your form after the deadline, then you may be placed on a waiting list for bus transportation. If there is a high demand, waitlisted students may not secure a spot on the bus until next school year. Students will be expected to ride the bus daily to maintain their spot on the bus.

Robotics + LEGO = fun with friends!
We're interested in starting a FIRST robotics club at Avery for kids in grades 2nd-5th. FIRST LEGO League introduces science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to children ages 4-16* through fun, exciting hands-on learning. FIRST LEGO League participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together.
