May 2nd - Global Day of Design
Mitchell Middle School along with over over 60,000 students signed up to participate from 600+ schools, in over 12 countries and four different continents for the Global Day of Design. Our students will be creating games out of cardboard with the goal of have a working game by 2:00 PM that day. Students began thinking, planning and designing their games on April 24. Students are encouraged to bring in any supplies that will help make their game great (marbles, straws, tape, paint, cardboard, glue). Whatever they need to make it great! Parents are invited to join us at any point throughout the day to see the design process in action!
As well, parents and students are invited to MMS at 5:30 PM that day to play games and see how MMS students use technology during the school day.
At 6:00 PM we have a special screening of the movie ‘Most Likely to Succeed’. The purpose of this event is to foster meaningful discussion among educators, administrators, parents, and students about how current obstacles can be overcome and steps towards change can be taken on a local level. Born out of these conversations is a community-wide commitment to moving forward; transformational initiatives are undertaken and real change is ignited. This event is open to the public. Please visit mltsfilm.org for more information about the film and movement.
We hope to see you here on May 2!

Monthly Spotlight
Netflix Series
To date, no student has approached me directly about this show. To be honest, I'm not sure if our students are watching this or not but thought I'd pass along this information so parents are aware of what this show is about and some tips to talk to children who may be watching it. Kids are watching this series in other places so it's matter of time before our kids catch wind of it if they haven't already.
GUIDANCE FOR FAMILIES
1. Ask your child if they have heard or seen the series 13 Reasons Why. While we don’t recommend that they be encouraged to view the series, do tell them you want to watch it, with them or to catch up, and discuss their thoughts.
2. If they exhibit any of the warning signs above, don’t be afraid to ask if they have thought about suicide or if someone is hurting them. Raising the issue of suicide does not increase the risk or plant the idea. On the contrary, it creates the opportunity to offer help.
3. Ask your child if they think any of their friends or classmates exhibit warning signs. Talk with them about how to seek help for their friend or classmate. Guide them on how to respond when they see or hear any of the warning signs.
4. Listen to your children’s comments without judgment. Doing so requires that you fully concentrate, understand, respond, and then remember what is being said. Put your own agenda aside.
5. Get help from a school-employed or community-based mental health professional if you are concerned for your child’s safety or the safety of one of their peers.
