Gladiator News
Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School
May 23-27, 2016
Greetings Gladiator Community,
This past week 102 students were inducted into National Junior Honor Society. I continue to be amazed at the high level our students perform academically. It's nice to see a packed cafeteria recognizing so many students for their dedication to learning.
We welcomed our newest Gladiators on Tuesday and Wednesday at our annual Gladiator Camp. The 5th graders received a tour of the campus, learned about dress code, practiced getting into lockers, listened to our fine arts students perform and had a scavenger hunt. Our building was buzzing with excitement!
This will be the last newsletter of the school year. If you are returning next year, open house and Market Day information will be mailed out in early August. If your youngest child is moving on to high school, be sure and remove yourself from our Remind alerts. (Unless you want to stay connected!) We will use the same number to stay informed for the 16-17 school year. If you have friends starting their middle school journey, encourage them to sign up. (text: @hgms1 to 81010)
For those of you that have been connected with HGMS for several years probably know and recognize one of our coaches, Jim Young. Coach Young will be retiring this year after serving 34 years in education! Coach Young opened the school and has been a constant in our outstanding athletic program. His knowledge, expertise, quick wit and humor will be missed on the field and in the school. We wish him well as he plans to spend more time with his family, in particular, his grandson. Thank you Coach for sharing your passion and talent with our young athletes.
Family Involvement is a very important part of educating our students. To ensure continuous improvement in the area of Family Involvement, Dr. Woods requested a district wide evaluation on the District's Family Involvement Program. We would appreciate you taking a few minutes to complete this parent survey. The survey link will be available from May 6-25.

From our Librarian, Lucy Podmore
For the past seven years I have had the distinct pleasure of serving this community as the your librarian, but recently I was offered and accepted the librarian position at Clark High School for the upcoming school year. This was an incredibly difficult decision on many levels, one of which was leaving the amazing support and friendships I've developed with so many parents and your wonderful children. When I hear adults complain about teenagers or heap praise on anyone who teaches middle school I always just smile and think - you have no idea how lucky I am to be surrounded by these wonderfully, creative, energetic, and curious people everyday. Are they exhausting? Sometimes, but mostly, they keep me young and fuel my desire to keep learning, and for that, I will be forever thankful. Thank you for sharing them with me and encouraging them to read and use the library. Their vision of what a library is and what a librarian does (Creepy Cafe, LibraryLounge, Creative Kits, Mini-Museums, BOOKTALKS!) is very different from what you and I may have experienced and I am so proud to have had some part in creating that vision.
Thank you for all the support you have provided specifically to the library. I've been blessed beyond belief and the envy of other librarians in the district because of you! Recently, I was calculating the number of volunteer hours that were donated to the library this year. The total was over 1,200 hours! An unheard of number and one of the reasons why this program is so successful. There was only one other school that could have lured me away from here and that was Clark, the high school my eldest attends and where my youngest will be in two years. I'll be replacing the librarian who opened the school 38 years ago, so clearly, these positions don't come along often. HGMS will always hold a special place in my heart because of the outstanding staff who always pushed me to be a better educator, the fabulous parent support, but mostly the students. What an amazing seven years it has been. Thank you for everything!
