HANDWRITING WITHOUT TEARS
Handwriting is taught to our Preschool, Young 5's and Kindergarten students At Baker Elementary. Students begin learning how to write by using letters found in their first name. HWT is the curriculum used at Baker Elementary. It is important to teach your child in the same manner as to how he or she is learning in school. This provides the most consistency and leads to the greatest success. Overall, when teaching handwriting, it is crucial to provide students with plenty of verbal and visual cues in order to help the child memorize the appearance and feel of the letters.
- HWT works sequentially, initially teaching all of the upper case letters and then all of the lower case letters.
- HWT utilizes simple terminology to describe how the letters are formed (e.g. Big Line, Little Line, Big Curve and Little Curve).
- HWT focuses on right/left discrimination in order to help the child determine his/her dominant hand (hand which holds pencil/utensils). It also focuses on helping the child to help him/her be aware of the right side of the body versus the left side of the body.
- HWT utilizes several whole-body activities to help the child in retaining the information (e.g. Music and Movement; Imaginary Writing and Letter Sizes and Places).
Kindergarten Students Only
The fun: We want you to come with your child, enjoy a doughnut hole and a bottle of water, and take a few laps around our 1/18th mile track.
Along the way: Talk with your student about a topic of THEIR interest (we'll have a few ideas for you). Enjoy the outdoors and get those minds and bodies going. We want our students to walk the track (no running) with a significant adult and spend a bit of time in conversation (this is very important for children).
- Children: MUST be accompanied by an adult.
- This event is for Kindgarten students ONLY. This is a special time for these students to spend 1-to-1 time with an important adult in their life.
- Doughnut holes and water: Provided by WEPA
- Treats and walking: from 8:30-8:50
- Enter the playground area through the east gate and walk to the track
- Finish at 8:50. Students will enter the building through the side door and wait for school to start in the hallway.
*FYI - Baker Elementary houses 10 classes of preschool, 4 classes of Y5s, 7 classes of Kindergarten and 5 classes of 1st grade. We have a total of over 400 kids every day at Baker Elementary. To keep our special events safe and manageable, we must divide our students up by grade level to help accommodate all potential visitors to our building.
HALF DAY - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30 - Baker Dismisses at 12:00 Noon

HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS
Halloween activities at Baker are scheduled for Thursday, October 31. Weather permitting, we are planning on having the traditional “downtown” Halloween Parade. The all-school parade will begin at 1:50. See your child’s classroom newsletters for specific party times and details. For the parade, children walk in costume with their teacher and parents are welcome to walk along.
Please do not send students to school in their costume or face make-up. Students will have time before the parade begins to get dressed. Costumes should be very simple. Time does not allow for elaborate dress. We also ask that costumes be age appropriate and not too “scary”. Costumes should be fun but we ask that you avoid monsters or creatures that are bloody, vicious or are associated with current events that might be frightening to young children. Students should wear comfortable shoes for the parade—please no high heels.
REMINDER—No guns, swords or weapons of any kind are permitted in school.
Adults are asked NOT to dress up. Halloween dress up activities are for the students and their teachers only. All parents and visitors will be required to sign in at the office. All parties will be concluded by 3:10. Parents may take their child home early and the child will not be given a tardy. All students must be signed out at the front door before leaving.
Again - We ask that parents DO NOT dress up in costumes. Visitors with a “scary” or “inappropriate” appearance will be asked to leave.
