HSD Dual Language Family Newsletter
2nd Edition - Winter 2022-23
Welcome
We also celebrated our second annual Dual Language Family Summit on October 29th. It was wonderful to come together in person and virtually to empower families and learn about their hopes and dreams for their students in the program. Around 65 families actively participated in sessions about Special education TAG, McKinney Vento, Social Emotional Learning, College, and Career, and more, for grades pre-K to high school. This was not only an opportunity for families to learn about our systems but also an opportunity for us to learn how to serve them better. Most sessions were recorded and uploaded to the event website. This event was possible due to the collaboration of many district staff, student volunteers and parents. We want to thank our families for attending and all staff who made this event possible. We also want to thank our community partner, Hillsboro Public Library, for gifting our families free bilingual books at the event! We're proud to serve the diverse Hillsboro Community.
Diverse Educator Pathway
The Diverse Bilingual Educator Pathway Program is a mentor/support program for students within our district that are interested in pursuing a career in education and are either of diverse ethnicity or bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese. Students in the program receive the necessary help finding a college pathway that best suits their needs. As part of the program, they are given internship employment opportunities over the summers during their time in college. Once students complete their programs they are given hiring priority for positions that open up at the beginning of each school year. Currently, we are serving our 9th-year cohort with 30 high school seniors.
Liana Duran
6th grade teacher -W.L. Henry Elementary School
“Liana is an amazing educator who works purposefully each day to empower her emerging bilingual students. Every student thrives in her class, regardless of their learning style, current language proficiency, or academic history. Her teaching exemplifies the pillars of dual language education, and it is a joy and an honor to work alongside her.”
Learning Specialist-W.L. Henry Elementary School
Brenda Faulder-Padilla
"Brenda goes out of her way to support the implementation of the dual language program in all of our PK classes. She mentors, teaches, coaches and collaborates with all PK staff and admins with students in the forefront to support and improve their services. I don't think I have ever heard a "no, I can't" from her. She finds ways to support even if it means having to learn it herself. We are very lucky to have her in our system."
Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning
Mayra Martinak
"Ms. Marinak is a passionate Dual language teacher. She wants all students to succeed and goes above and beyond to make sure that happens."

Miguel and Caritina Castaneda
"The Castaneda Family is amazing-they are involved and elevate the voices of all our families at Witch Hazel-when they give us feedback they think of everyone....not just their family. Miguel and Caritina consider all the aspects and challenges and truly work hard to support our community. They help me grow our partnerships, ex: OMSI --please watch: https://vimeo.com/704664619/5622444374
They are a gift to our team, active members of our PAC with a love of Hillsboro in way that promotes change for the better. We are made better by their presence and volunteerism."

Santiago Aldaz-Puga
Santiago is a young teacher with a great vision for his students, whose lessons involve abundant discussion and group work. In the classroom, he has established a climate and a culture of collaboration and respect where everyone, students and teachers, work in unison for a common goal: learning, always keeping the Spanish language high. Santiago is a great advocate for the needs of his students and families, particularly those historically marginalized and underserved. Considered an important member of not only our DL community but also our Latino community in Hillsboro. A familiar face to our families and a teacher who keeps his mind and doors open to all members of our community and especially the parents and legal guardians of his students. It is common that after the school day, the teacher Santiago attends functions, sports games, quinceaneras, birthdays, and every extracurricular activity, community or family event to which he is invited by his students. Enjoy attending to support them, cheer them on, and celebrate the achievements not only academic, but also sporting, artistic, cultural, and family achievements of our youth, inside and outside the Hilhi building. This school year, he has joined the leadership and mentorship of the student group "Link Crew". We are all very excited, and particularly the students, because they finally have a bilingual teacher!
