Background Infomation

Machu Picchu is a historical city up in the mountains of Peru, which is in South America. The closest city to Machu Picchu is called Cusco. In 2007, it was voted one of the seven wonders of the world. Aeroplanes are not allowed to fly over it. The actual person who found it is called Hiram Bingham in 1911. He called it "the lost city."

You can get raft trips down a river called The Urubumba River. It is also known as the most spectacular place in Peru! There are over 400 different plant species. Also a nearby town called Aguas Calentes has thermal baths.

Tourism is the only income they have. So this is a crucial part of there business Cultures can be exchanged between each other. These are the benefits.

Bad things about tourism is that slowly, the city is eroding. When this eventually happens, the nearby towns will have no income and poverty will become a huge issue. The porters who carry the travellers bags will have health problems later on in life: back problems. Even though they exchange culture, there are so many tourists, they end up losing there own culture. A pretty big problem is that there are landslides.

This area is protected by the U.N (united nations) so it cant be demolished or replaced by houses. They are cutting tourists allowed in the area by 800 to help tackle the problems. Also less roads will be built around it giving it a natural look.

As the city is so close to the sky, therefore the Incas thought that they were closer to the Gods.It is remote and hidden by the Amazon Rainforest.
