What are Magnet and Choice Schools?
Hillsborough County Public Schools is proud to offer families unique educational experiences tailored to students' goals and interests. Each year, families can choose from a variety of Magnet and Choice Attractor programs, along with 90 innovative Magnet programs in over 42 schools. These options are meant to inspire students to discover new interests while preparing themselves for successful careers. This year, the Magnet and Choice window runs from October 27-December 16.
To apply, visit https://www.hillsboroughschools.org/Magnet beginning October 27. The applications are NOT first come first served, which means you can apply any time throughout the window for consideration. Please review the many educational pathways that may interest your child and apply before December 16.

Hillsborough County Public Schools will hold the following events for parents and families to explore the variety of different Magnet and Choice Attractor programs available for next school year.
- Magnet 101 event, October 25, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Join the Supervisor of Magnet Schools, Robert Cox, and Magnet Placement Specialist Andrea Stingone for a VIRTUAL night of discussion revolving around Magnet Schools and Programs. Our largest event of the year is back, and we are taking you on a wild adventure! Explore your options at the Magnet Schools and CTE Expo on Thursday, November 3, from 3 PM- 7 PM at ZooTampa.
During the event, you will have the opportunity to meet school administrators, teachers, and students and ask them questions while you learn about their schools and program offerings. Admission is FREE, and there will be food and beverages available for purchase.
This is the perfect chance to see what piques your child's interests and will best meet their educational needs. All schools at the Expo will be listed on the Magnet and Choice Attractor Program Application.

In-Depth with Davis: Explore Magnet and Choice Attractor Offerings
It is never too early to begin a career in the medical field! At Dunbar, your child will participate in student-led inquiry and goal setting while engaging in exciting medical explorations. And on our #MedicalMondays, we wear scrubs! Your child will benefit from partnerships with Florida Hospital Tampa, USF Departments of Health, Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, Pediatrics, and the College of Nursing.
Students participate in a Medical House Program, choosing from the House of Neurology, Physiology, Zoology, or Botany. House meetings create opportunities to gain knowledge about their chosen fields. Your student can also participate in service-learning projects and medical based field trips. STEM exploration is an everyday occurrence with a full makerspace, 3D printer, ad robotics equipment.
Our electives engage all students with Career and Technical Education, Family and Consumer Science and our AVID college readiness program. Sligh supports our students with free after-school tutoring, enrichment programs and student clubs. Our Sixth Grade Structure helps students feel at home in their new learning environment with a family-oriented sense of community, created by our caring and dedicated staff—who are the heartbeat of our school.
This state-of-the-art school will serve students district-wide beginning with 9th grade in 2023-2024 school year. Additional grade levels will be added with each subsequent year. Hillsborough Medical Academy will focus on providing students with mentorship opportunities with industry professionals along with workforce-related electives.

Greco Middle Magnet School

Williams Middle Magnet School

Hillsborough High School
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme at Hillsborough High School is a magnet program that provides highly motivated college-bound students the opportunity to participate in a rigorous liberal arts curriculum. The program is a four-year course of study with two phases: Grades 9 and 10 are the Pre-Diploma Programme, and Grades 11 and 12 make up the IB Diploma Programme. Students apply in 8th grade to enter the programme beginning in 9th grade.
King High School
C. Leon King High School opened in 1960 with 58 staff members and 960 students. The school was named in honor of C. Leon King, a distinguished and respected member of the Hillsborough County Board of Public Instruction for 18 years.
- King High School is a traditional/hybrid magnet. It has one of the four International Baccalaureate programs. The IB program of King began in July 1993.
- The King High School orchestral program has maintained their status as the county's top orchestra program.
- The King High School National Honor Society is the largest chapter in the State of Florida.
- Attractor programs include KAPS (King Advanced Placement Scholars), Robotics, Culinary Arts, Teaching Academy, and King's relationship with the University of South Florida as a Professional Development School.
- King has been recognized by Newsweek Magazine as being among the top 10% of all high schools in America.

Robinson High School
All students can learn and should be challenged to the full extent of their capabilities. Students learn in different ways and should be provided with a variety of instructional approaches to support their learning styles. Each student is a valued individual with unique physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs.
Assessments of student learning should provide students with a variety of opportunities to showcase their abilities and comprehension of learned skills. All students work best in a safe and caring environment. The commitment to continuous improvement is necessary to enable our students to become confident, self-directed, lifelong learners. Faculty, staff, parents, and community members share the responsibility for providing the environment and commitment to advance the school's mission.
Research suggests many benefits to choosing the DP. The Programme aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge: students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically. IB studies also provide students with the opportunity to earn college credits while in high school.
What is a Collegiate Academy?
The Academy will not only provide academic preparation but also other types of “college knowledge”, such as self-management of study routines and preparation for assessments; handling the pace and expectations of college courses, and strategic use of resources such as college advisors and ambassadors from local college campuses. Research shows that students who take dual enrollment classes are more likely to graduate from college.

What is a the Cambridge International Program?
Middle schools offer Cambridge Programs which allows students to eventually earn an international diploma by taking advanced academic courses and passing exams administered by the University of Cambridge in England.
This rigorous program prepares students for postsecondary careers by engaging in curriculum with a strong emphasis on critical thinking, analysis, interpretation, writing and collaboration. HCPS offers Cambridge classes from middle school throughout graduation, offering students the opportunity to graduate with a Cambridge degree.
Passing AICE course exams in high school qualifies students for college credit and earning an AICE diploma by meeting established requirements and completing 100 community service hours earns them Bright Futures scholarships.

Boys Preparatory Academy at Franklin Middle Magnet
Rodgers Middle Magnet School
Muller Elementary Magnet immerses students in the performing arts with weekly strings, dance, music, and art classes. Students can partake in orchestra and rock band along with an annual musical.
Environmental studies is also a focus with an outdoor classroom and Global Gardens. Students can participate in National Honor Society and Student Government to hone their leadership skills as well.
Shore Elementary Magnet School
Shore Elementary Magnet School of the Arts was chosen as one of the first 55 Nationally Certified Magnet Schools from 2017-2021!
Students in grade 1-5 have an extra Arts Experience each week with students in grades 3-5 showcasing their talents in a Winter & Spring Encore performance.
Shore has an Annual Musical at the end of the year. The musical is auditioned-based and rehearses numerous times a week after school. Previous musicals include The Little Mermaid Jr., Willy Wonka Jr., The Lion King Jr., The Wizard of Oz YPE, Peter Pan Jr., Beauty and the Beast Jr., Aladdin Jr., and Frozen Jr. This year's musical is The Wizard of Oz Youth Edition and will be performed LIVE at HCC Mainstage Theater in Ybor City on May 17th & 18th 2023.
Every year Shore hosts the Annual Arts Festival in which artists and performers share their talents with students during an all-day interactive event. This event will be taking place along with the Great American Teach-In on Thursday, November 17, 2022.
There are also a variety of Performance Groups for students to participate as part of our Arts in the Morning Program. These are auditioned based groups and rehearse in the morning. These groups can be seen at various evening events at Shore as well as various events in the community. This year the Arts in the Morning groups include World Drumming, Mallet Percussion, Chamber Orchestra, Shore Dance Company, and Club Fauve Art Crew.
Students in Grades 4 and 5 also have the opportunity to audition and interview to become Arts Ambassadors. These students are shining ARTS Stars and are featured on the Morning News and Shore YouTube videos, as well as perform safety patrol duties, conduct school tours, and more!
Our campus includes two professional dance studios, video production, visual arts and MAC lab and exceptional music and technical theater suites. Through arts-based electives, our students shine and grow in the Visual, Performing and Communication Arts. Our student artists also connect through after-school clubs, which include All-State honor groups, hip hop dance, the Green Team Recycling and our performance rock band.
Our staff is dedicated to nurturing all students through an arts-integrated environment, setting the stage with our Sixth Grade Structure, helping students feel at home at our summer orientation Cub Camp. Blake High School is the premiere high school for performing, visual, and communication arts located in downtown Tampa on the scenic Hillsborough River. In partnership with local mentors, artists, arts organizations, and universities, this program provides students with rigorous arts, technology and academic programs.
Visual Arts
The visual arts program provides an opportunity to study painting, drawing, sculpture, jewelry, digital imagery, photography, ceramics, glass, printmaking, and mixed media. The program allows the student to meet professional artists and engages students in art experiences through partnerships with museums and galleries.
Communication Arts
The communication arts program encourages and develops the unique voice and talent of the student interested in Creative Writing, Print, Broadcast Journalism, and Digital Media production. Students also explore opportunities and careers in the areas of screenplay writing, poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, public speaking, media production and radio broadcasting.
Performing Arts
Music - The performing arts program offers a wide array of courses which are designed to help students develop their skills for expression. The curriculum includes music programs in Chorus, Guitar, Harp, Band Orchestra and Piano.
Theatre - The theatre program provides a study of Drama, Musical Theatre, Costume Design and Technical Theatre through the performance of plays and musicals.
Dance - The dance program encourages the creative use and development of dance as a medium expression that bring forth the vital aspects of the dancer including creator, writer, interpreter and arts advocate. Audition Information: Students must complete an application to be considered for an audition. Students who meet the academic criteria will be invited to audition.
Students applying for the Performing Arts (Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Piano, Harp, Guitar, Drama, or Musical Theatre) program will perform an audition. Students who apply for the Visual or Communication Arts (TV/Film, Creative Writing, Journalism, Technical Theatre, Art or Costume Design) program will present a portfolio. A short interview will also be part of the audition/portfolio presentation.
Students MUST audition to complete the application process. Auditions will only be granted to students who meet the academic criteria.
What is STEM?
Engaging in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) lessons and activities allows students of all ages to develop skills they will use in school and throughout their future career. These skills include problem solving, critical thinking, collaborating, and communicating.
Our STEM vision at Hillsborough County Public Schools is that (1) ALL students will utilize mathematical skills and apply science conceptual understanding in a deeply technical environment to solve real-life problems using engineering principles and design thinking and (2) ALL students will be immersed in competitions and events that afford the opportunity to enjoy STEM while applying concepts learned in the classroom.
Our approach to STEM education includes utilizing a network of collaborating partners including: institutes of higher education, business partners, philanthropic organizations, and many science-rich cultural institutions. Through the use of experiential hands-on learning, a constructivist approach to education, and cross curricular collaborations between Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Career and Technical Education we ready our students for college and career success, thus preparing them for life.

Stewart partners with NASA, NOAA and the U.S. Air Force to provide real-world learning opportunities. Exciting field trips make us a launch pad for learning with visits to Kennedy Space Center, Tampa Bay Watch and The Florida Aquarium.

Madison Middle School
Out-of-this World Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Academy
Madison Middle School’s STEM Aerospace Academy is one of the premiere Choice programs in Hillsborough County Public Schools. Students accepted into this program will engage in rigorous coursework, project-based learning, competitions, and field trips to prepare them for opportunities in Aerospace/STEM. In addition, students will have an opportunity to engage in on-site flight simulation and robotics activities. Students are a part of grade-level cohorts throughout their middle school career, and will have the same teachers all three years. All academy students are required to take a Technology course every year while attending Madison.
Points of Pride for 2021-2022 school year:

McLane Middle School
On our voyage to academic excellence, we are technology-driven, with a computer available to every student in every classroom. Through Electives, students sample exciting courses, including Band, Computer Science and our AVID College Readiness program.
Classmates connect through our sports teams and clubs, featuring our nationally ranked Robotics team and our award-winning all-girls Robotics team. We are proudly a Social Emotional Learning school and Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports school, fostering well-rounded students who are Vikings strong.
Buchanan Middle School
Buchanan's prestigious STEM Academy in North Tampa is the only middle school in our district to immerse students in Bioengineering. As one of our district's original STEM Academies--Science, Technology, Engineering and Math--Buchanan Middle's program teaches students to use traditional engineering techniques to solve problems in the field of medicine. STEM students are grouped together all three years with the same core teachers.
Robinson High School's Aerospace Academy
Students will partake in Flying Fridays, where learners can practice in the cockpit in a Microsoft Flight Simulator. In addition, they will experience field trips to aerospace companies, airports, air shows, and more.
The last two years of the program, students have the opportunity to become an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University student by taking Dual Enrollment courses each semester for 3 credits each, for a total of 12 college credits over two years for free. Students in the IB program can also take part in this program.
Middleton High School: Cybersecurity, Game Design, Engineering
- Cyber Security and Computer Science: Students entering the Cyber Security program will begin by studying the hardware and software of personal computers in preparation for the nationally recognized A+ Certification Exam. Hands-on labs and virtual desktop learning tools will help students develop critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills. The Cisco CCNA® curriculum will then provide an integrated and comprehensive coverage of networking topics, from fundamentals to advanced applications and services such as cyber-security, while providing opportunities for hands-on practical experience and soft-skills development. Students will be prepared for the CCNA® and CCENT® exams. This program allows students to develop the skills necessary to enter all fields of computer programming and computer engineering at the postsecondary level.
- Game Design: The Academy of Computer Game Design program prepares students for the dynamic world of video game design and animation. Students practice the highest technology skills in Programming, Graphic Design, Management, and 3D Modeling. Students earn Industry Certifications, such as MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist), Adobe Certified Associate-Photoshop, Adobe Certified Associate-Flash, and Autodesk Certification (3D Studio Max or Maya). They also learn complex technology skills that can be transferred to other careers, such as data base development and management for business systems.
- Engineering: The Engineering program is a nationally recognized pre-engineering curriculum of Project Lead the Way (www.pltw.org). Courses in this rigorous curriculum include: Introduction to Engineering, Principles of Engineering, Digital Electronics, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Civil Engineering/Architecture, Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Design & Development. Students use the same industry-leading 3D design software used by companies like Intel, Lockheed Martin and Pixar, such as Autodesk Inventor Autodesk Revit, and AutoCAD.
Tampa Bay Tech: Academy of Architecture and Environmental Design
Brandon High School Finance Academy
The academy gives high school students an opportunity to learn about and prepare for college and/or careers in business, entrepreneurship, and the financial services industry. Emphasis is placed upon a college preparatory curriculum that is directly linked to the financial world. Brandon’s Academy of Finance was awarded NAF's highest honor in 2021 as a Distinguished Academy.
Program courses include: Business Communications Technology, Accounting Applications (H), Summer Internship, Personal Financial Planning (H), and Business Ownership (VEI). AOF students that complete the Finance Track are eligible to apply for the $20,000 William A. Gregory Foundation Scholarship.
FBLA is the co-curricular student organization for all business and technology students.
CERTIFICATIONS - Students have the opportunity to attain industry certification in Entrepreneurship & Small Business, CIW Social Media Strategist, and Intuit Quickbooks.
Essrig Elementary School
Hillsborough County Public Schools is excited to offer a Montessori Academy for the first time ever at Essrig Elementary School. Lomax Elementary Magnet School
For more than a century, Lomax has served its community as an elementary school, sixth grade center, and high school as part of Hillsborough County Public Schools. In 2002, Lomax became a Magnet school for students in grades kindergarten through fifth. The cornerstones of the magnet theme are: Enrichment, Electives, Exploration, and Expeditions, “The Four E’s." The school colors are purple and gold and the school mascot is the Florida Panther.
Boyette Springs Elementary School
The Center for Gifted Studies is a program for first through fifth grade students located within Boyette Springs Elementary School. The Center is designed for identified gifted students who seek a full-time gifted program offering advanced level learning experiences and opportunities for talent development.
The Center for Gifted Studies offers a high quality and distinctive program specifically for students who meet Florida’s Gifted eligibility requirement. The Center utilizes the research-supported Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) approach whose goals are developing talents, providing a broad range of enrichment experiences, and providing advanced learning for children based upon interests. The approach emphasizes engagement and the use of enjoyable and challenging learning experiences and results in the development of motivation, creativity, advanced thinking skills and collaboration.
A student must meet one of the criteria listed below for this application to be processed.
- My child is currently enrolled in a Hillsborough County Public School (HCPS) and is classified as Gifted in Florida and has a current Florida Gifted Educational Plan (EP) or a current Florida Individual Education Plan (IEP) that includes Gifted Services.
- My child is currently in a private school, home schooled, or resides out of county and is classified as Gifted in Florida and has a current Florida Gifted Educational Plan (EP) or a current Florida Individual Education Plan (IEP) that includes Gifted Services.
A copy of the EP must be submitted to complete this application. - My child has a qualifying score on an individually administered standardized test of intelligence (IQ test).
A copy of the formal evaluation report from the licensed psychologist must be submitted along with the application. - My child is transferring from another state and is classified as Gifted in their home state AND has an Educational Plan (EP) / Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) Or Official Documents/Records that give evidence that student received Gifted services from the previous state/district. A copy of the Official Documents/Records must be submitted to complete the application.
Tampa Heights Elementary Magnet School
Tampa Heights Elementary Magnet School of World Studies and Technology was built in 1906 by volunteers from the surrounding neighborhood and was originally named Michigan Avenue Grammar School. The school now serves a diverse population of 310 students in grades K-5. Although the school building is over 100 years old, it strives to provide the latest technology to its students and has maintained its status as a front runner in educational innovation since becoming a magnet school.
At Tampa Heights Elementary Magnet School teachers use a variety of instructional technology to infuse our authentic World Studies theme to create an environment that fosters the highest levels of social, emotional, and intellectual development. To support the World Studies theme, each grade level focuses on a different continent of study throughout the school year. Strawberry Crest High School
Fire Sciences prepares students for careers as firefighters upon completion of state and national exams. This four-credit program prepares student to provide initial care to sick or injured people as part of an organized medical response team.
In addition to Fire Science, the Emergency Medical Responder Program prepares individuals to provide initial care to sick or injured persons as ambulance drivers and attendants.
Students applying for CTE Attractor programs at both the middle and high school level must meet proficiency in either Math or Reading on standardized test scores to be considered for an offer.
Bowers Whitley Construction Academy
This cutting-edge school will welcome 9th grade students district-wide for 2022-2023. Grade levels will be added in subsequent years. Over the next five to 10 years, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects faster-than-average employment growth in the building and construction industry. This new Magnet school will meet that need as it partners with local industry experts to prepare students for college and/or career and the high-paying jobs in this industry right after graduation. Jefferson High School Finance Academy
The Academy of Finance equips students with the knowledge to excel in the financial marketplace. The program is a member of the National Academy Foundation, which offers students a curriculum in financial markets, banking, investments and financial planning.
Students participating in this program will have the opportunity to obtain a paid summer internship, work in the student-led Suncoast Federal Credit Union branch, participate in job shadowing field trips and compete in DECA events.

Students are also exposed to a wide variety of legal expertise through guest speakers such as local, state, and federal judges, DEA agents, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys. Students also participate in various curriculum-oriented field trips.
Jefferson Culinary Arts Academy
