A Message from your child's Literacy Coach:

We want you to be informed about The Alabama Literacy Act. The Alabama Literacy Act was passed to help improve reading in Alabama public schools to ensure students are reading on grade level by the end of the 3rd grade. Reading is the gateway to lifelong achievement and the students of Alabama deserve a strong start on their path to success.

It’s crucial for parents to be actively involved in their child’s reading journey, as this law places a significant focus on literacy by the end of third grade. In order for 3rd-grade students to be promoted to the 4th grade this school year, they must demonstrate sufficient reading skills.

Our goal is to work with families to provide our students with the essential skills they need to excel academically and enjoy a lifelong love of reading. We encourage you to reach out to us with any questions or concerns. We will be sure to share resources with you to utilize at home to support your child.

Attendance Matters

Please see the average attendance rate for Skyland last week. Our goal is to have at least 95% attendance each week! Please strive to be at school, on time, every day.

Changes in Transportation

  • Changes in transportation must be sent in writing to your child's teacher. Please do not call during the school day to change the mode of transportation because it is not guaranteed that the office staff can communicate the message in a timely manner.

See Something, Hear Something, Say Something

Parents,

We will discuss this as a school on a regular basis (SEE SOMETHING, HEAR SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING) but it is essential for parents to have conversations and discuss expectations with your student (s) in regard to safety and discipline. We are encouraging students to report ANYTHING they feel uncomfortable about or that concerns them. Students can report directly to a teacher, principal, or staff member, email, complete a Let's Talk, etc. If they share information with you, please let us know.

Safety First

Skyland Family,

Please be prepared to identify yourself by providing your ID. Anytime a student is checked out, ID ‘s will be verified with the PowerSchool Portal. Please be sure your contact and check-out list is current. Visitors to the building will have to be scanned through our Raptor system. Parents will not be allowed to ask the office to have the child ready for check-out prior to the parent or guardian's arrival.

Safety is a priority at Skyland Elementary. Throughout the school year, there will be routine weather drills, intruder drills, fire drills, and mixed-method searches. Skyland administrators will follow the behavior protocols listed in the Tuscaloosa City Schools Code of Conduct. Please review the Code of Conduct with your child when you receive a copy at the beginning of the school year. All discipline and safety measures will be strictly enforced. No exceptions!

Students are not allowed to receive food deliveries. In compliance with federal guidelines, outside food must be in a lunchbox or unmarked bag. The school will not provide those bags.

Please do not text your child on their phone or watch during the school day. If students are not feeling well, they must visit the school nurse who will contact the parent. If you need to speak with or send a message to your child during the school day, please call the office.

The school day begins at 7:55. If students arrive after that time, please escort your student into the building. If students arrive without a parent after 7:55, the parent will be called and required to come to check the child into school. At the end of the school day, students must be picked up on time at 2:40 pm.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the administration at Skyland.
