GO SKYHAWKS!
A Thought or Two from Mr. Nieslanik
These past two weeks have been very special at SRHS. We have had hundreds of students engaged in many different activities. Last weekend alone Southridge students represented our community in multiple ways:
- Girls Basketball won the 6A State Basketball Tournament and are back-to-back State Champions.
- Boys Basketball finished fourth in State.
- Hawkettes performed with precision at the State Basketball Tournament.
- The Cheerleaders ended their season strong and led many, many, many students in cheering on our basketball teams at state.
- Speech and Debate has nine students moving onto State, and two additional students are alternates.
- Mock Trial is moving onto the State Competition in only their second year.
- Winter Guard placed second at the Skyview High School Competition.
- Winter Percussion is doing very well, and represented SRHS with pride at the West Salem Competition.
- And over 50 students are in the crew, in the orchestra, or on stage in an amazing production of Big Fish.
- Over 20 Latino student leaders represented SRHS at the statewide Cesar Chavez Conference at Western Oregon University.
In the last 10 days Southridge High School excelled on the court, on the stage, and in competition. There is no better place to be than Southridge High School! Thank you for sharing your student, athlete, performer, and leader with us!
I highly recommend you see Big Fish. In my 23 years this production is by far one of the best high school musicals I have ever seen! It is fantastic. Bring your family, bring your neighbors and also put a few tissues in your pocket! The dancers, the musicians, the singers, the ensemble, and the crew are all absolutely outstanding.

Final Week of the Book Drive
The three advisories with the most donated [new/used] books will earn a pizza party. The books will go to the Beaverton City library to benefit our community.
Unity Week is Coming! Mar. 19-23
The highlight of the week is the Unity Assembly where students are invited to represent their heritage by wearing traditional/cultural clothing, and/or performing dances or songs from their native countries. Student are full of pride for their ancestry and their performances are always amazing and inspiring.
Unity Week is meant to highlight us as a school community, to celebrate our vast and diverse cultures, heritage, and unify us as a whole. This year, we want to put a free shirt on every student in our school that further connects us as SRHS Family. We invite you to watch the short video that explains our mission and help us meet our goal by making a contribution on our Go Fund Me site. And please feel free to share this link on your personal social medias to extend our funding potential. Thank you.

PARKING LOT SAFETY
A greater number of parents are choosing to drive their students to school rather than taking advantage of District buses or allowing them to walk or ride their bikes. School parking lots are not designed for the resulting volume of traffic this creates, which can present serious safety issues.
We ask all drivers to be patient and observant while in our parking lots. Please complete cell phone communications before entering the school property. Distracted driving is unsafe on all roads but can be especially dangerous in busy school parking lots.
-The front, south parking lot is staff permit parking only. Students should not be dropped off or picked up in this lot.
-Brief parking (5-10 min) is allowed in the horseshoe during the day to pick up/drop off a student. Visitor parking spaces are available in the front, north parking lot.
-School buses fill the front driveway (horseshoe) for afternoon pick up starting about 2:10pm. They depart about 2:40pm. Cars in the horseshoe at this time will not be able to exit until the buses leave.
Parents, please talk with your student drivers about parking lot safety, being a considerate driver, and observing the 5 mph while on the school grounds. Accidents that occur in a school parking lot should be reported to insurance companies and or the Beaverton Police.
PTO News
Join Us! The next PTO meeting is Wednesday, April 11 @ 6:30pm in the Community Room. Our guest speaker will be Officer Mike Bewersdorf, Southridge’s Resource Officer (who needed to reschedule his presentation from an earlier meeting). He will discuss the new marijuana laws and vaping. A representative from Yes for Beaverton Schools will also be present to briefly share information about the levy renewal. We hope to see you there!
You can view the minutes from our previous meetings, and any handouts, on our website: www.southridgepto.com, click on Forms & Documents.
PTO Open Board Positions
We are always looking for volunteers, and welcome any parents that want to become better acquainted with what is going on at Southridge. We also need parents who are interested in holding board positions. The PTO cannot remain a non-profit entity at the school without a minimum of President, Secretary and Treasurer.
The PTO works to support staff with funds through grants for extra classroom supplies and extension activities, athletics equipment and uniforms, and school wide repairs. Every year the PTO raises $12,000 for scholarship awards. The PTO also coordinates volunteers for school wide and community building activities.
We would appreciate your help filling our board positions next year so we can remain active and continue to support Southridge. Openings include: Treasurer (ideally two), Secretary and Fundraising Lead. For more information email president@southridgepto.com today!

ACT Exam Day, April 3
The Beaverton School District will again provide ACT testing for all of our grade 9 - 11 students. This year, the exam is on April 3. On that day, at all high schools across the District, juniors will take the ACT Plus Writing college admissions test. At the same time, 9th and 10th graders will take one of the two “pre-ACT” tests: ACT Aspire for 9th graders and the Pre-ACT for 10th graders. The ACT Aspire will be online; the Pre-ACT is a paper test. These two tests track academic progress and student interests to help guide students toward college readiness.
The ACT and Aspire tests can also be used to meet the statewide testing requirements for graduation.
Seniors will not need to be in attendance on April 3, and regular classes will not meet. The library will be open for those seniors who would like to study or complete class projects or assignments on campus. As in the past, this day is an excellent opportunity for seniors to complete any remaining service learning or to use the day for college visits or other preparation for "next steps" after graduation.
ACT has provided some online resources to help students prepare to take the ACT. A practice test is available to students taking the ACT test on paper (which Southridge will do). Preparing for the ACT Test offers practice test questions, starting on page 10.

District Calendar for 2018-2019
Just a reminder… The start date for the 2018-2019 school year is Monday, August 27, 2018. This information was first published in June 2016 following the announcement of collaboration time and the addition of nine student days over three years.
Starting before Labor Day is a change in practice, so we want to make sure parents are aware. You can download the calendar on the District calendar webpage and view other important dates and calendars in several other languages.
