Notes from our Social Worker Ms. Calderon- (Safety: Part 1)
Parents and Guardians,
Hello! Here at school, we have begun to discuss safety- what it means, why it’s important and how we can we stay safe in different situations! In this specific newsletter we will be discussing how we can stay safe at home. Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home. Below are many ways that you can help your child continue to learn about the theme of safety, through reading about it, talking about it, and practicing it! Thank you and have a great day!
Read About It
Here are some books to help you learn more about Safety. The first one is recommended for PK-1 and the second is recommended for 2nd-4th. They can be found on youtube:
Be Careful and Stay Safe by Cheri J Meiners
What does It Mean to Be Safe? by Rana DiOrio
Practice It
Here are some examples of what you can do to practice being safe:
PK-1st: Teach your child important information such as their parents names, phone numbers, and address in case of an emergency.
2nd-4th: Create a plan together in case of an emergency (ex: fire, stranger at the door, etc.).
Talk About It
Here are some discussion points to help you talk about safety with your child:
•What does it mean to be safe?
•Why do you think being safe is one of the expectations at Graves?
•What will you do if you feel unsafe?
•Who can you talk to if you feel unsafe?
