Inside the Idea Lab
This week we got to visit Library/Idea Lab twice!
On November 11 we discussed Veterans Day and learned about our genre of the month, Historical Fiction. We also talked about our Dewey Decimal range of the month, the 900s, which encompass history and geography. In preparation for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, we read a wonderful adventure book called How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World. After we read our story and checked out books, many from the history section of our non-fiction books, we worked on a variety of activities. Upper grades worked with circuits and coding games while kindergarten and first grades worked on puzzles. They were so proud when they worked as a team to successfully complete them!
On November 15 we continued our themes of Veterans Day and history by watching a video reading of Remembering Vera, Patricia Polacco’s wonderful book that tells the true story of a small dog who served in the U.S. Coast Guard. After our video we created cards to thank our veterans for their service. These will be sent to active or veteran service members. Some students with military service members took their cards home to give to their loved ones. We then checked out books and for second through fifth grades, one book was either a history or historical fiction book. At lunch recess, our fifth grade book club met again today. We will meet again after the Thanksgiving break.
Our next library day is Thursday, November 21. Please help your children remember their library books!
Holiday Family Night
Believe it or not, we are nearly ready for the Gates Mills Holiday Family Night! This year’s concert will take place on Thursday, December 12th. Students should be in their classrooms by 6:40pm, with the program beginning promptly at 7pm. Each class will sing, and we will have audience participation! Traditionally, students dress up for this concert. Girls should wear skirts or dresses, and boys should wear dress pants and a collared shirt or a sweater. Holiday attire is encouraged, such as snowflake sweaters or Santa hats.
In each class, there will be certain students who have special instrument parts or other jobs to do. If your child will not be attending our concert, please let me know as soon as possible so I can make appropriate arrangements. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
If you have questions about the Holiday Concert, please contact Mrs. Hall at 995-7412 or e-mail her at RHall@mayfieldschools.org.
Clinic Clothes
Special thanks to Officer Arch and his wife for purchasing winter hats and gloves for the clinic!
We are in need of sweatpants, sweatshirts, long sleeve shirts, socks, snow pants and boots for both boys and girls in grades K-5. Also, if your child has been given borrowed clothing from the clinic, please launder and return to Mrs. Schmidt. Thanks for your continued support.
It's Cold Weather Time Again!
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to participate in outdoor recess (i.e., coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants, etc.). As stated in the handbook: All students are expected to go outside unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or the wind chill is below 10 degrees. Generally, if a child is able to ride the bus and attend school, (s)he should also be able to outside at recess. The only exceptions are: a physician’s request, a written parent request for the day the child returns to school following an illness, or a request by the teacher or Principal. We have a limited amount of clothing for students to change into should they get wet or muddy outside, so please consider sending in an extra set of clothing for their children.
Coats for Kids
We are off to a slow start for our Coats for Kids drive as we head into the winter season. This drive has always raised an abundance of much-needed items for those in need. There are collection boxes at the school’s main office for donations of winter gear. Please consider donating to this worthwhile cause!
Coats for Kids accepts all of the following (new or gently worn):
- Winter Coats
- Hates, Gloves, Scarfs
- Snow/Ski Pants
The collection drive lasts from October-December, 2019. Thank you in advance for your generosity. We appreciate your support!
