Playing Games with Number Sense in Mind
Lauren Walton, Mathematics Coach
Children grow up playing games and for this reason games can be very useful in developing and reinforcing ideas and strategies. Over the last few weeks we have looked at a series of games that support the development of number sense, which helps are students move past rote knowledge and into understanding more about numbers.
You can help your children build their number sense by playing simple games with no materials necessary! So far we have looked at What’s the Question? Who Am I? Which Number Does Not Belong? And Which Has More?
This week’s Number Sense at Home game is called And the Answer Is...
And the Answer Is… is a simple game in which kids need to compute a series of quantities in their head. Example: Start with the number of days in a week. Subtract the number of wheels on a tricycle. Double that number. And the answer is…?
This is a wonderful way for students to practice their mental math strategies and think more about quantities around us.
Try it out and let us know how it goes at lwalton33@framingham.k12.ma.us ! We’d love to hear how you’re practicing Number Sense at home.

CARE & SHARE
The Jane Shapiro Care and Share began in 1995 as a Dunning School community service project. Each month a specific food item is collected at the school to help keep A Place to Turn's shelves stocked. What a great sharing and learning project! Donations are gathered up by the students and then with help from staff, they are delivered to A Place to Turn. Learn more about A Place to Turn here.
Thank you for your contributions to A Place to Turn during the year. Our monthly food collection makes a huge difference in our community, while teaching our students the importance of giving.
