Significance: First large battle of the Civil War. Made the Union and the Confederacy realize that the war would be more difficult than they thought!

Significance: The confederacy believed that they were going the win the war based on a winning streak of two, however, this was a turning point for them. Pickett's Charge failed and the South losses the chance to threaten the North. this also hurt the confederates morale, while increasing the North's

Fredericksburg
Location: Fredericksburg, Virginia
Significance: Robert E. Lee and his troops fought off 14 Union attacks, preventing them from reaching the confederate capitol. There were twice the amount of deaths of the Union than the Confederates and the largest total number of troops fought in this war.
Causalities: Union=2x as many as the Confederate

Antietam (Battle of Sharpsburg)
Location: Sharpsburg, MD
Significance: Was 1 of the 2 battles fought on Northern territory. Lee invaded in hopes of gaining Maryland, however, when they failed they fled back to the South. Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation.

Vicksburg
Location: Vicksburg, MA
Significance: The Union gained the Mississippi river, which was a giant step in defeating the South and winning the War. They gained control of the river by pinning Robert E. Lee's troops down for 3 months.

Surrender at Appomattox Court House
Location: Appomattox, Virginia
Significance: Robert E. Lee surrenders and the Union is determined winner of the Civil War. By April, Union General Ulysses S. Grant had cut off the Confederates supply line and forced them to leave Richmond and Petersburg, however, the Union overtook them West of Richmond.
