HES List Server Message

October 14, 2016

Hello Holland Elementary Parents,

Below is a link to the information regarding the HES Halloween Parade which is scheduled for Monday, October 31st. In the event that weather requires that the students parade inside, we will inform the community early in the day via list server message and post any changes on the HES home page. Please note that the parking lot will be blocked off at 2:30 pm that afternoon so we do not have moving traffic with parading students.

Halloween Parent Letter

A Halloween costume reminder: Please remember that costumes incorporating weapons and/or depicting violence are not appropriate for school. We also ask students to be sensitive to our younger students when selecting costumes. Lastly, given the latest local and national news, we are strongly discouraging scary or creepy clown costumes. Your support is greatly appreciated!

STEM Program Update

Our STEM program in Astronomy is currently underway, and the Flight and Rocketry program begins October 27th. There is still plenty of time to enroll your child in our program; forms and information are available on the HES webpage in the ”Our School” tab.

Also, look for information in the coming weeks about the Holland Observe The Moon Astronomy night on November 14th at 7:30PM. Astronomers from area sky-watching clubs will be bringing their telescopes so that Holland students and their families can gaze at the full moon and observe constellations. Also, moon rocks obtained by the Apollo astronauts will be on display. These rare artifacts are on loan to us from NASA for a short while, so be sure to join us on Astronomy Night so you can say you held the moon in your hands!

Teacher-Parent Dodgeball Tournament

Holland Elementary is having a Parent-Teacher Dodgeball Tournament on Friday, November 4th at 6:30 pm at Council Rock South. We’re looking for parents to join teachers in creating teams for this event that is sponsored by the Holland Elementary PTO. This will be fun for the children and adults, but we need players!

This is a great opportunity to get some exercise, show off your skills, make your child proud, and have a lot of fun. Anyone interested in playing should contact me via email: jmacclay@crsd.org. Check out this link for more details. HES Teacher-Parent Dodgeball Tournament

I know that the students are going to be really excited about this event. It's a chance to see their teachers and other parents having lots of fun. Click here for information about tickets: HES Dodgeball Tournament - Ticket Order Form

The PTO soft pretzel sale is on Friday morning! $.50 each!

Emergency Drills

Next week, we will be conducting emergency drills within our school, as we will practice the Lockdown Drill and the Shelter-in-Place Drill. Lockdown Drills are designed to protect our children in the event there is an intruder who enters the building (inside threat), dangerous incidents in the surrounding neighborhood, or an intruder on our school grounds (outside threat). Safe Shelter is designed to protect the children from weather related emergencies. In addition, fire drills are practiced monthly. Teachers review emergency drill procedures with students throughout the year so that they are well prepared and understand what is expected of them. In these practice exercises, we try to find the balance between taking the activities seriously and not causing unnecessary anxiety with the children. If needed, please remind your children that these are simply ways to practice to make sure that our school remains safe each day.

Demographic Verification Form

Parents who have not completed the Demographic Verification form on the Home Access Center (HAC) will receive a hard copy sent home of their child's demographic information. If you receive this, please read over the information, follow directions for verifying the document, and return it to school by next Wednesday, October 19th. This information is vital to the school for having accurate contact information along with providing the school nurse with authorization to administer medication to students if needed. Thank you.

Bus Damages

Over the last few days, there has unfortunately been damage to one of the buses that Holland Elementary School students ride. The staff and I will speak with the students regarding the need to respect district property. Possible consequences for damaging a bus could include suspended bus riding privileges. I ask that parents reinforce the message with their children about taking care of our buses.

Safety Concerns
Mornings and afternoons can be hectic times for families who are hustling to get to school or after-school events. I ask parents to make sure that they drive slowly in the school parking lot and neighboring streets. Specifically, there have been safety concerns on Crescent Road, as there is no sidewalk for students to walk. Thanks so much for helping to keep the children safe.

Volunteer Clearances:

Please keep in mind, if you plan on volunteering at Holland or any other school in Council Rock, you will need clearances on file in our district’s Human Resources Department. Parents who do not have current clearances on file will not be eligible to be a chaperone field trips or volunteer in the classroom.

New Incentives for Collecting Box Tops for Education!

With the start of a new school year, the PTO would like to announce that the organization will be doing away with the old coupon rewards for collecting Box Tops. Instead, the children will be competing each month on an individual and classroom level to earn rewards!

Each month, the children are requested to send in as many Box Tops as they can and at the end of the month, the Top Five students with the most Box Tops will earn a Pretzel Party with Mr. MacClay! In addition, the classroom with the most Box Tops at the end of the marking period will get their picture featured in the Principal Newsletter as well as a special treat provided by the PTO!

The rules are as follows: 1) All Box Tops must be whole and valid to qualify (must include expiration date and cannot be expired) 2) The Box Tops can be submitted via collection sheet or in a Ziploc bag which must have the student's name, teacher's name and grade clearly printed on it. That's it! If there are any questions, please contact Alicia Gontarek (alicia.gontarek@gmail.com). Thank you for your continued support of the PTO!
