William D. Cuts Jr. High Newsletter

June 2022

We have made it to June and the end is in sight. Activities are winding down and students are gearing up for final exams. It has certainly been a memorable year, an encouraging one, as we came out of restrictions and got back to junior high life.

The year started with optimism and nervousness. The hope of normal activities was there but so was Covid. We got a mix of both, with clubs and teams and classes being closer to normal, and still some online learning for certain classes. As the year went on it got progressively better, to the point where we have been running all of our activities without restriction.

Being able to run clubs, sports teams and school wide events has brought an excitement back to the building. It was great to have everyone together at the Terry Fox Run, WD Cuts Olympics, and our track day. Leadership students were able to once again volunteer in the community at elementary schools and senior centers. Classes from the school also were out in the community raking leaves and shoveling walks. A gesture that was greatly appreciated in the neighborhood.

There was much to celebrate this year as well. The drama crew was able to put on 2 performances and took home 3 awards at a competition in Westlock. The second production was held in conjunction with a fine arts night, highlighting the work of our very talented art students. Athletically, our teams and individual athletes had a lot of success. HIghlighted by championships in volleyball, badminton, and rugby. There were also numerous athletes who won, or placed highly, in the zone track meet.

We hope that everyone has a great summer. All the best to those moving on to high school or to other schools, and we look forward to seeing everyone who is returning to WD Cuts in September.

Rugby 2022

Tier 2 Finals Wednesday, June 1st wrapped up with both teams in 2nd place! There was some blood (not ours), sweat and tears left out on the field. Both teams ran hard all evening.

Tier 1 just wrapped up Thursday, June 2nd and the girls fought hard to 3rd place! Boys, however, walked off the field with the 1st place trophy in hand! (First time in 6 years!). That first place moment was great to see and even Mr. MacDonald was acknowledged on the field by the coordinators! (Awww)

Thanks to everyone who showed up to our games and supported us this season. We had great weather and are excited for next season. The victories were great but it was even better having kids outside playing good rugby.
